Dress 4-6 weeks before the big day?

Long story short...I ordered my gown, and the salon said that they would have it in 4-6 weeks before the wedding.  They wouldn't give me a straight answer of how long it takes from order to delivery, but insisted this way it would be fresh and new....

I'm worried that 4-6 weeks is cutting it close, and i KNOW it will need some alterations.

I asked my local board and they said that is cutting it close.  I am curious what this board has to say..(and ps, i'm nervous waiting that long to see it)

So what do you think? Should I call the salon and say i want it earlier? or is 4-6 weeks reasonable?

  • 4-6 weeks is cutting it close but you should be fine as long as you have your alteration appointments set up for as soon as your dress gets in.  If it's making you nervous then call the salon and see what you can do to get it in earlier.  You may have to pay a rush fee though.

  • I was told my dress would be in about 30 days before my wedding.  It came in last week.  My alteration appt. is tomorrow.

  • I think that is do-able. If it were 4 or 6 days, I would be freaking out. Like pp said, just set up your fitting appt now so that you don't have to wait in case they are booked and busy. And you can always call them to see the exact date. I know the bridal salon where I ordered my dress gave me like a week window after they had spoken with the designer when it would arrive.
  • Just make sure whoever is going to do your alterations can fit it in and complete it in that amount of time.  My alteration place was really busy, and it took five weeks for my dress to be altered.

  • Yeah; my alterations will take over 4 weeks for the first fitting; and if your body is going to change drastically then, you won't have time for final fitting, etc.  I would recommend putting a rush on the dress if it's not that much cost.  It will save you some stress during the last month before your wedding.
  • That is cutting it close.  My friend just got married and she had a hell of a time getting her alterations done.  She had to go in for 3-4 fittings and they finally got it right 3 days before the wedding. She was so stressed.

  • From your ticker it looks like you have almost 10 months until your wedding. It is beyond me why your salon can't get you the dress sooner than 4-6 weeks before the wedding. I would hope that they say that as a precaution and it will come in much sooner! I don't think with your kind of gap that 4-6 weeks before is reasonable at all.
  • Special order wedding gowns generally take 4-5 months to come in. Couture gowns can take longer. 4-6 weeks before the wedding is a good time to start alterations. That way, if youre body is going to fluctuate at all, the dress will be fitting as close as possible. 4-6 weeks is plenty of time for alterations, ive seen them completed overnight if they need to be!
