When should I start looking for a dress??

Sooo, Matt and I are in the middle of a really long engagement (but that's what we wanted, so it's cool), but I'm really getting antsy about going dress shopping! All the timelines I've seen in magazines seem to suggest a 9-month timr frame or so. Since we're still 18 months out I'm worried that if I start looking now and find "the" dress, buy it, etc., that in another few months I will change my mind and see "THE" dress. On the other hand, you know how whenever you need to get something you can never find what you want? I guess I'm worried if I wait until the 9-month-mark I won't be able to find anything and will just get really frusterated.

My question, then, is when did you all start looking? Did you wish you had started sooner? Later? If you did start shopping really far in advance did you wait to buy or did you get it after finding the perfect dress?

Thanks!!

Re: When should I start looking for a dress??

  • With my ex we had a 2 1/2 year engagement till I graduated college so I can relate to you. I went into shopping 100% sure what I wanted. The problem I had was finding it, it took me about 6 months to find "the dress". Some people it is the first dress they try on others it can take a while.  I would say you can start casually shopping now but if you do find one stop looking and do not try any others on.

Also if you are budget bride it is nice to try on early so you can search and see if you can find it used or online and save a bunch of money too.
  • It is never too early to start looking. I really started a year before. If you find the dress and you dont have to have it right away there is always the possibility of waiting for a great sale on it or if it will go out as a sample soon. SO.... GO AND TRY SOME ON!!!
  • Go ahead and start looking.  It might take a while to find your dress.  I started looking (and bought!) back in September, and right now we're 16 months away from the wedding.  I hadn't thought I'd find what I liked in my budget so easily.
