Short dresses for all? (Bride & Bridesmaids)

Hey ladies,

I am planning on getting married on a Saturday night (ceremony to start around 6:30pm and reception until 12am) and am having a dilemma when it comes to our outfits. Our wedding colors are navy, yellow and white and we are going for a retro feeling while still keeping things classy ;)

We are a very laid back couple and there's no way I would ever get the FI in a tux. We are thinking nice slacks, matching vest, tie, and vans slip ons for the groomsmen.

Now, this is where the dilemma hits. I really wanted to wear a vintage inspired tea lenght wedding dress but is it appropriate for a night time wedding?

Also, if my dress is short should the bridesmaid dresses be long? Everything I look at and like is strapless. I don't want me and the bridesmaids to look too similar but still want to keep our laid back, retro feel.

Thanks ladies!!

  • I think if you go short, the bridesmaids should also probably be short, but it's your wedding, you can do whatever you'd like!  since you guys are pretty laid back, don't worry about any rules.  just because it's evening it doesn't mean you have to stick with something long and formal, especially if your FI and his guys aren't in tuxes or full suits.
  • Absolutely! Especially if your FI is going more casual, I think it makes perfect sense for your gown to be tea length, regardless if it's a night wedding. And your bridesmaids can have short dresses too, no one will confuse them for the bride. ;)

  • I'm wearing a vintage-y tea length strapless dress for a 5:30 wedding, so I think it will be fine.  Especially if your wedding will not be formal.  My girls are wearing cocktail length dresses.. Believe me you won't look similar to the bm's unless they are in a white dress :)

  • I think that if your dress is tea-length, theirs should be similar. Tea-length is not really more casual, if you dress it up. It's just retro/vintage looking, but can still be as formal as you want.

If the bridesmaids wear long dresses, it might look strange next to your shorter one. I'd have them get shorter.
  • I think it's fine :) Plus short dresses are adorable, you can make anything work with them! :) I decided to go short for mine even though our wedding's in late November. Check it out! http://vcr-helpwedding.blogspot.com/2012/04/dont-stress-about-dress-part-one-of.html
