do wedding bands need to match?

I know this may not matter to some people and it doesnt really to me, but is it uncommon for the bride and grooms rings to not match? I have a 1/2 carat princess cut solitaire ring set in white gold.  The ring Im interested in is 5 small diamonds in white gold, while my fiance likes the looks of the beveled edge tungsten carbide with one or more diamonds.  His would be a darker silver/ black color. Thanks!

Re: do wedding bands need to match?

  • Absolutely not. I think those days are long gone. You both should get what you love!
  • Nope. Get something that is your style and he should get something that is his style. He should WANT to wear his ring because it reflects what he likes.

  • ours are completely different i dont think they need to match
  • thank you all so much! I think we were both going to get what we love anyways, just wanted some input! :)

  • Yep. Originally we were thinking matching, but then FI ended up with his grandfather's wedding band (simple yellow gold) and white gold with stones looked best with my engagement ring, so we went with what we each wanted. We're each going to wearing our own every day, not stand and stare at our hands next to each other :)

  • Mine and my H's bands do not match.  I have a princess cut diamond on a white gold band, whereas he has a simple gold band.  We both love our rings.

A friend of mine insisted that she and her H get matching bands because she was afraid that people would think they weren't married to each other.  She is the only person I've heard of having this mentality.
  • My DH and I got matching bands because that's what we both liked (they were simple hammered gold bands).  However, it is not necessary and I think it's actually pretty rare these days to match.
  • Ours aren't going to match.  The one I like is a curved white gold band with diamonds along it....  and FI wants a darker tungstun.... with a celtic design on it.

  • My parents started out with matching rings, but now my mom has a terrifyingly large set in platinum that she had made out of a ring my grandma gave her and my dad still has his simple yellow gold band. My fiance and myself will be having matching rings in color, but he will have a different metal -- I told him that it's okay for us to have non-matching rings, but he's weird and insists that at least the colors match.

  • Not at all. Only 1 couple I know that got married recently has a matching set, which had to be special ordered because they're not that popular anymore.

  • Ours don't match, and I have no idea if any of my married friends' match b/c I've never looked close enough.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Nope, You can both get what you want :)
  • The only similarity in ours is that they are both white gold.  His is a plain band and mine matches my e-ring, so it has small diamonds in it.  You definitely don't need to get matching bands!  I loved shopping for our bands, have fun

  • Nope! Your rings certainly do not have to match. Get what you both love.

Our rings are so completely different from each others. Mine is white gold, antique in style, two thin bands fused together. H's is yellow gold with ruby and onyx - a very atypical wedding ring. I wanted H to get something that fit his personality, which is big and bold. It's something that he loves and wears it everyday.

  • Nope.

I pretty much decided I didn't want matching bands and FI agreed. We rather have bands that reflect our own personal taste (we are complete opposites).

  • I didn't even know people matched their bands.  I don't think my H would've liked a band of diamonds.  :D

  • Nope, ours are way different! It's the ring, not the style that counts :)
