My dress came in...

and the stupid shop ordered the wrong size. Now I need it taken in - a lot.

I need reassurance this can be done. My dress is rusched (sp?) across the front and back. It's going to have to be taken in like 3 or 4 inches in the hips, and 2 or so around my waist, etc. I don't want to leave it at the shop and have them do it - but I am also nervous to try and find some random seamstress and have to trust her off the bat. Did any of you girls need major alterations like this to your dress? Can I try to make them pay for it since she said she was going to order one size and then she ordered a bigger one?

  • If they ordered the wrong size, can they order you the correct one and rush it? That should be on them to get it correct.

  • If you specified a size in the order, and they screwed it up, then it is on them to fix it.  I would either demand that they re-order the dress and have it rushed -- on their dime -- or pay for the extensive alterations.  I'm sorry you're going through all this, I think it's crap when bridal stores pull these kinds of stunts.

  • In the paperwork you received when you ordered/ put your deposit on the dress, what size does it specify?  If it is the one you should have received, then the store needs to recognize that they are the ones who messed up, and rush order it, without you having to pay for it.  If they are a good store, they will do that.

However, if the receipt says the size that you got, then you're probably just going to have to eat the cost of the alterations.  It's doable, but can get expensive.
  • Thing is, it can't be reordered because it was discontinued back in December.... :-(

[QUOTE]They probably ordered a larger size so they could charge you for alterations. maybe??

That is EXACTLY what I'm thinking.... but now when I got to them and be like 'you pay for it', I'm sure they will say no. I'll have to check my receipt and see if it has the dress size on there or not....

  • of they definitely ordered it too big on purpose.  There are so many bridal shops that do this because they get more money for it.  I say if you can find the size in your paperwork, and maybe even if you don't find it, raise hell and tell them they will pay for it to be taken in because that can be a lot of money, especially with the detail you describe.

  • If your paperwork states to order size x and they ordered y, then no matter what they say to you, insist on having them do your alterations for nothing. You did not receive what you ordered.

  • Since they can't order you a new one I would definitely try to get a discount on alterations. They should have ordered you the correct size to begin with and they need to be the ones to fix it! I probably wouldn't throw a huge fit though because I wouldn't want them to screw the dress up out of spite.

[QUOTE]You didnt mention anything about how it fit you in other places. For places that have to order a standard size, they order you the size that fits the largest part of your body. Here is a scenario-   Bride tries on dress size 12. It is snug and fitted at her bust, but is too big everywhere else.  She thinks that she needs to get the size 12. The consultant might also agree. But then seamstress sees that the cup length is too short and the bust points are off. She actually needs a 14.  .. also those sample dresses that you tried on have been tried on by hundreds of women...the seams get pulled and the dresses get a little bigger over time.  I imagine that there may be some dress shops might take advantage if the sizing/alterations process. No busy, profitable shop is going to mess around with that though. Alterations are costly for a reason. They take lots of time. And someone has to be paid for that time. If you are still thinking that the store has wronged you...youre going to have to get past it. It doesnt sound like you  have the option to reorder the dress. So now you have to decide where youre going to go for alterations. Start looking in your local forum for recs..also talk to recently married family, friends, and co workers. Sorry for the stress youre experiencing, but it sounds like you might  not be looking at the situation from any other point of view than yours.
