White Bridesmaid Dress as Wedding Gown?

Would this be a bad idea to wear a white bridesmaid dress as a wedding gown? I am worried the fabric will not be a high enough quality to suit my tastes, but I would really like to save the money, as well as forego the train.  This is my second wedding, as well as a destination wedding, so I am looking for something fitted and a bit less formal.

Re: White Bridesmaid Dress as Wedding Gown?

  • It's not a problem at all! The fabrics on bridesmaid dresses are usually not any lower in quality than the fabrics used in bridal gowns by the same designer.
  • why not just shop for any white dress?  it doesnt' have to be a bridal gown or a BM dress....why limit yourself??
  • My sister tried this, it didn't come out too well b/c of the fabric of the BM dress so be careful with what you choose. She went and got a wedding gown instead

  • I think it is a great idea. I girl I used to work with found a white BM gown which she wore as her wedding dress. It saved her a ton. She recommended me doing the same thing after we got engaged, but of course I fell in love with a more expensive gown. She also had a really laid back semi-casual ceremony, so it worked out perfectly for her.
  • I think its fine.  But like Reese said, just look at any white dress!  My girlfriend actually wore a white prom dress on sale after prom season.  She saved a ton!

  • Definitely--if the white dress doesn't have "bride" attached, you may luck out and get better material. This Nicole Miller is a knockout, and look on Nordstrom as well: http://www.edressme.com/nicole-miller-bridal-01.html http://shop.nordstrom.com/sr?keyword=white+gown&origin=keywordsearch

  • i think it's fine! as long as you like it on it doesn't matter if it's a BM dress
  • Definitely.  My cousin wore a BM dress and she looked amazing.  And of course it will save you a bundle.
  • I think it's totally fine.

i'm wearing a bridesmaid dress for my beach wedding. it looks like one of the j. crew bridal gowns, but it's half the price!

i tried on a bunch of gowns and they were too heavy for my liking. so the consultant had me try a couple of bridesmaids dresses that come in ivory and i fell in love. Smile

you could also try j. crew, macy's, bcbg, or white house black market.

  • Saja bridal also has amazing dresses. i went to the store in NYC....check them out! they have their own site (just google saja bridal) and they were just featured on the One Wed blog!!
  • Sounds fine if you find a dress you love, although I noticed that Jenny Yoo carries many of the same styles as bridesmaid dresses in a variety of colors or as bridal gowns in white/antique white, not sure if the quality of the fabric is better for the bridal gowns but they are over twice as expensive and it seems like it's just because they are white!

Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • yep! i dont see why not. as long as it gives you the 'feeling' that 'yes, this is MY DRESS! :D' then it shouldnt matter what it is :)
