another dress woe type question

My mermaid gown was too snug when it came in.  I could barely breath and walk and certainly couldn't sit down.  I had it altered and now I can do all of the above, but I'm a little worried about how it now doesn't have that awesome smooth n snug look to it anymore :(  It seems like it defeats the purpose of that style gown.  I like breathing, it's kinda my favorite thing to do, but I miss that almost painted on look!  Would it look funny to have it adjusted again to fit more snug from the waist up, but still leave that extra room around my legs so I can still sit and walk?  Not sure what to do and I'm almost temted to just say to heck with it, sell the dress and get something else :/

Unless you have pictures, I can't really formulate an accurate opinion.

I am a fellow mermaid bride, and I just used a longline bra and slip/crinoline to help it fit to my liking, but at the same time not have the fabric of the dress so tight that I couldn't sit or breathe.
