Groomsmens Attire

Wondering what to have the men in the wedding party wear for an October daytime wedding.

Groom (me) will be in morning dress, ( and kittel for ceremony ). I haven't picked the colour of my waistcoat / tie yet, though I am leaning towards buff, or maybe a pale gold or copper, possibly with pattern ( to be a bit wacky ).  The tie will most like match and be of ascot variety.

The other guests will be dressed informally, men in (dark) suits and ties.

I would like the men in the wedding party to be at least a bit more formal than the rest of the guests.  I can have them in morning dress as well, but that can be expensive, and might not be otherwise ideal.  Would strollers be most appropriate?  Can I get away with tuxedos (easiest) or is that gauche for the daytime?

As for their accessories, should their waistcoats and neckties match mine?  can they wear something bolder ( especially in tuxedos )? What stile of tie should they wear?  I would love to give them some freedom of expression, but I am not sure on which parts I should do this and still have the ensemble look cohesive.

Any thoughts and suggestions are most appreciated.

  • Honestly I might be dumb but I don't know what a lot of the things you said look like.  Do you have pictures or examples of what you are wearing or thinking of having them wear (morning dress and stroller)?

Are you haing a dress code for your wedding that you know what the guests will already be wearing?

And is your reception during the day too?

You could do suits for the guys in the WP and have them with different colored vests or something than guests would wear so people know they are in the WP.  I like tuxedos but I have never been to a daytime wedding.  I would think its more important though for them to match the theme and formality of your wedding than they time of day.  If you are having a very formal event or black tie affair (I'm only thinking maybe that since you said guests will be wearing black) then I think its fine to have them wear tuxedos.

  • If the groom is in morning dress then the groomsmen should match.  Do whatever you like for the vests/ties.

The classic gray ascot always looks nice or you can do it in the modern english style and choose a festive colorful four-in-hand with a buff vest.

If you are very worried about cost, there is nothing wrong with asking the bridal party to wear their best suits, but be prepaired to lose all control at this point.

I say no to the Dinner Jacket for a day wedding.
