Sorta Black Dress?

Good Morning!

I'm attending a wedding in Chicago next May.  My brother and his fiancee are planning a beautiful wedding (I was given a link to see the place where they are holding the ceremony and reception- very modern and chic), but I'm in a dilemma what to wear. I know it's early, but I'm on a tight budget, and tickets from my area will not be cheap, plus the hotel costs...

I have a lovely satin strapless dress, knee length, modest neck, fitted to waist. The problem- it's black. Not completely, it has taupe around the top, smaller to larger dots on the skirt, and a taupe sash. Provided it's not Black Tie/ Full length gown only, would it be appropriate to wear that dress, perhaps with black heels and a taupe shawl to a wedding Memorial Day weekend? I want to look nice for this wedding, it's my only brother, but I also don't want to make any faux pas at their wedding. Thoughts?

Re: Sorta Black Dress?

  • Is you only issue that it's black?  If so then that's not a big deal.  Black is acceptable to wear to weddings (the only color I know that is not is white).

  • What's the issue here? Black is certainly acceptable. You can always accessorize with brightly colored jewelery.

Also, if you personally don't like the dress at all, you can often find beautiful dresses at consignment shops or even Goodwill. Also, stores like Marshalls or TJ Maxx for $20-$30. You don't have to buy a brand new dress from Dolce & Gabbana...
