WHY, WHY, WHY?!

For God's sake, isn't there anyone out there with any imagination when it comes to wedding dresses???  Why must they ALL be either white, ivory, champagne or beige?  What about the brides who are either getting married for the first time or (like me) the second time, who don't want to wear a washed out dress?  I'm sick of seeing beautiful cookie cutter dresses in the same frothy colors.  Oh, there are some that have a little splash of color, but are mainly still white.  Forget tradition!

I'm bound and determined to wear a gold satin dress and I will be just as married as I would be if I'd worn white.  I know I can't be the only one who feels this way; come on ladies, sound off!

Re: WHY, WHY, WHY?!

  • Have you looked at Vera Wang's new collection? She incorporated some lovely colors in her wedding dresses...

But I agree. I'm all for dresses that aren't so cookie-cutter cake-topper style. Too bad those styles usually come with a price!!

  • I haven't looked at dresses for months now because I'm so sick of white.  I'll take a look at the two designers mentioned and see if I find anything I like.  The other problem I have is that most designers seem to think that us full figured girls only want dresses that look like shopping bags.  I have curves that deserve to be defined, not hidden under layers of fabric.

While I do understand that tradition calls for a "white" dress, I would think that the designers also follow the trends and make things that are more modern.
  • You must've been reading my mind!  LOL I feel the same way about the strapless/spaghetti/ off the shoulder dress thing!  I'm getting married on New Year's Eve.  If the weather holds up, the ceremony will be outside in a tent and the reception in the ballroom.  There is no way on God's green earth that I want that much skin exposed at 7:00 in the evening in December.  I had no idea that finding a dress would be this much trouble.
  • For me it's not really about tradition... I just LOVE the look of a white dress.  But I'd feel  weird wearing a big white dress any other day.

So white wedding dress it is for me.

I agree with pps though, you don't HAVE to buy a wedding dress. Just buy a formal gown.  There are tons of them out there, and they're gorgeous!

I also love Vera Wang's newer stuff.  Pretty pinks, beiges, even black.  Very lovely.

[QUOTE]I felt the same way about the strapless wedding dresses.  I didn't want to be shrugging a shawl back up onto my shoulders throughout the ceremony, or yanking the top back up. Not everyone likes strapless or spaghetti strap stuff. Sometimes I think fashion designers secretly hate women, or that they all get together at the start of each season and take bets on what hideous thing they can actually get people to wear.

I completely agree. And while they don't exactly take bets, they do purposefully change trends so we all feel the need to completely change our wardrobes and not wear an heirloom wedding dress. It's how they make money.

To my mother's disappointment, I gave up on bridal salons and am searching ebay for my (white) dress. If I don't find one, I'll wear my grandmother's dress.
  • Stop looking in bridal stores. Go to Nieman Marcus, Bloomingdales, Macy's, etc, etc.

  • I know I don't have to wear a wedding dress per se, but when you're planning to get married, you look for a wedding dress.  I just figured that with the way things are now(basically anything goes), it would be easier to find something non-traditional in a salon.

If my wedding colors had black anywhere in them, that black dress would be for me.  I love it!

@ monkeysip - your cartoon is hysterical!  I would've agreed with pps too, if her response wasn't so condescending.  I'm not complaining; I'm venting a very valid (to me) frustration.
  • Also, if you're on the brave side, try etsy.

There are a few good etsy bridal designers that do custom orders, or you may be able to find something already made that you like.

Just make sure the designer you pick is reputable, and try and see if you can find reviews other than the ones on etsy.

While I can't sympathize on the color, I definitely sympathize with the strapless gown thing.  I want sleeves, but I also don't want my dress to look boring or old-fashioned.

  • I love Etsy!  I never thought of looking for my dress there; that just might work.  Thanks Monkeysip (love the name too).

@ CMGr - Your "baby girl" looks great and so happy.   Thanks for the info.  ;)
  • I fell in love with this dress, especially since my wedding is black and white. I am thinking about it for the wedding dress. What do you guys think?
  • Have you tried looking at quinceanera dresses? Many of them are absolutely to die for beautiful, and they come in a riot of colors!
  • Umm.. they make tons of colored wedding-appropriate gowns under the title "prom-dresses"

Get creative in your search and stop looking specifically at WEDDING GOWNS. :]
  • I have seen tons of colored wedding dresses. You should try the Offbeat weddings board. They have tons of great ideas and could be helpful
  • I bought a "gold" colored dress at David's bridal for $50 on clearance... decided not to wear it but the dress I am wearing is also gold satin with ivory lace overlay.  i love it because it's not the traditional white/ivory color, but at the same time, it's not wildly out there either.  Not really sure what I'm trying to say, LOL, since PP have good ideas, I guess just don't give up, there are unique dresses out there and you will find something that suits you!
  • One of my BMs made a dress years ago for a friend.  Her friend had bought a parasol that was white with a large black lace overlay.  So she made her an antibellium dress (complete with hoop skirt) of white and had layers of black lace over it to match.  It was beautiful!

You might see if there's a local seamstress that has good deals.  There are lots of nice patterns that can be done in any color fabric you want.  Granted, you may pay more, but doing it that way gets you a one-of-a-kind dress in whatever you want.

  • My dress is a silvery/gray prom dress with a embroidered floral motif on the bottom. It's my favorite thing so far aside from my FI ;)

  • I absolutely love the idea, it is very cutting edge. Gold will be stunning so classy. I'm considering a red dress because I look crappy in white, worse in beige and, dam it, I like red. And finally I found this
