What is the canversion from street to plus bridal dress sizes?

I know it will depend on the cut and designer but I'm curious of a ballpark estimate.

I wear size 20 dresses, am curvy, anyone else wear similar and what size dresses were you trying on?

TIA!

  • I wear a size 12ish street clothes and when I tried on dresses in store I had usually a 16. It also depends on where you carry your weight.

  • Yeah, when i worked at DB's several years ago *most* girls ran at least 1 size larger in their gown than their street size.  I wore about a size 10/12 back then and a 14 fit perfectly.... just depends I think.
  • It really depends on the designer.  I have a Maggie, and I'm a 12 on the bottom/ 14 on top.  I ordered a 14, and its perfect.  However, there were some brands I tried on where the 16s and 18s were too small.
  • I agree it does depend on where you're bigger at.

We went to David's Bridal for my BM dress for my sister's wedding. I'm a rather busty gal with a hourglass figure, fitted properly in my waist I'm a size 6-8. Because of the dresses we ordered (which were rather low cut with little give) I had to get my dress in a size 14 and having it altered to fit my body properly . I was told by our attendant that most dresses go by european sizes so that's a 1-2 dress size difference that you typically need to go up.

However it does depend on designer as well, as some design for smaller bodies :-)
