Dresses ordered straight from a factory in China?

Has anyone ordered a dress directly from China, like Cinderellaswedding.com?!  The prices are great, and dresses are fully customizable but I am terrified to order sight unseen.  Anyone have experience with this?!!?
Thanks!!

Re: Dresses ordered straight from a factory in China?

  • Trust your gut.  These sites are usually unreliable at best.  The quality isn't always that great, and often the sizing is wrong.   My mom ordered her MB dress from one of these sites and it came in WAY to small (more like a 4 instead of the 14 she ordered), and she can't get her money back because the phone number doesn't work anymore and nobody will answer her emails.

Also, while a lot of Chinese companies are reputable, there are probably an equal number that are not.  There is no way to know if your money is going to support a company that employs kids in sweat shops, participates in international human trafficking, illegal drug operations....all of these are common to companies that make their money on designer knock-offs.

If you are looking for an inexpensive wedding dress, my advice would be to look at used dress sites (most pre-ownded wedding dresses have NEVER been worn), trunk sales, eBay or Craigslist, consignment shops, or discount stores like David's Bridal.

I've seen a couple of brides post how much they liked their dresses they ordered from sites like that but I've seen many more post about their horrible experiences.  The ones that have posted pics of their gowns (the ones that liked the dress), they really didn't look good.  They kind of look like the dress they wanted but the material was so awful.

Like pp said, trust your gut.  If you really care about what your dress looks like on your wedding day then there's plenty of designers that can fit within any budget.  If you have your heart set on a designer gown then look at preowned gowns.

  • I wouldn't risk it if I was you.  There has to be a dress out there in the real world somewhere that you will love as much as one as you see online.  There are gorgeous dresses in every price range.
  • I wouldn't risk it either. An aquaintance of mine ordered hers from one of those sites and thinks it'll be great...the rest of us are dreading when it comes in, we just have a bad feeling about it.

You never know, but I'd be worried about spending ANY money on something that you can't see first or that might be a hassle to return.

www.oncewed.com and www.preownedweddingdresses.com have great dresses for sale, some never worn and all authentic designer gowns. Look at those or scout out some trunk shows first.

  • I don't think so. It depends on your budget. It worth trying.
  • I too was tempted to check out those sites, but the very thought that when the $250 dress came in the mail and wasn't up to my expectations and it ended up as a Halloween costume was enough to keep me away.

There are plenty of options if you look around.  I went to a local bridal shop and am getting a beautiful lace and beaded dress custom made to my size for $499 after the $100 coupon they gave me.

Also check out sale sites like ruelala.com and ideeli.com.  Today one was having a MAJOR sale on dresses.  Most under $200, and these retailed over $1000.

I bought my dress from oncewed.com!  Its exactly what I wanted and I saved around $1,200, and you would never think it was used.  Definitely check out those sites if you're looking for a deal on a designer dress.
  • Keep in mind, if you have a problem, you will have a hard time getting your money back. Also, even though you provide your measurements, if the fit is wrong, you may find it expensive or impossible to get it alterned. There's no need to do it online. Lots of stores have great deals as mentioned by other posters on the board.
  • I've heard good and bad things. However, remember that these people will likely be hard to deal with if there is a problem. Good luck :)
  •  I ordered a dress from china, I recieved it the day before my wedding, It was lost, and when it did show up, the dress was 2sizes too small. Order Bigger :)

  • Please, please please read the FAQ section. I would hate for you to waste money on a dress that isn't right. As PPs suggested, there are many discount sites and pre-owned sites that have good deals, and still sell quality dresses. You can also try trunk shows or sample sales as well.
  • If you want to order a "cheap" dress online, try ebay or a similar site that has some sort of vendor rating system and method of getting your money back.  Don't trust a knock-off site.

David's bridal and Alfred Angelo sell dresses that are cheaper than most designers; or buy a second-hand dress.  Most used dresses have only been worn once or not at all.
