Need your dress quote for The Knot magazine

Hey Knotties,

I need a quote from you for the magazine. I'll use your knot name as usual. For this one I'd like to know:

How did you know your dress was "the one"? For example, did your mom or grandma cry? Did you feel the most beautiful you've ever felt? Was it when you put on a veil? Post your answer below.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Need your dress quote for The Knot magazine

  • I knew my dress was "the one" when my FMIL and FSIL went back to the dress shop and told me how good it looked. There were also other moms and brides trying on dresses and I received compliments from them as well. When I tried it on, my face just glowed. I don't believe I was wearing much make-up that day, but I just felt so radiant and beautiful in it.
  • I got really, really hot when I knew it was the dress, because I could finally imagine looking at pictures of myself 50 years from now wearing it and still thinking I looked beautiful. That emotion of, "Wow. This is MY wedding gown" was just overwhelming for me!

It was the last dress at the lost shop I went to. I'd tried on so many dresses and they were all starting to blur together for me. I thought I'd finally found it when there was 1 thing I didn't like. Then, the amazing shopkeeper (small mom and pop type shop) pulled a dress that I had missed, which is hard to do in such a small shop. I put it on and the more I looked at myself, the more I could see myself walking down the aisle to my FI. I'd always wanted a fingertip veil and then when they put a simple cathedral veil on me, I was sold. Even in the too small sample, bright red and sweating from getting so hot at the stressful feeling, and hair up in a ponytail, I felt amazingly beautiful.
  • I knew my dress was "the one" when it made me feel like a model. I'm on the tall side - a little under 5'8, but a lot of dresses I had been trying on made me feel small and petite. It wasn't a bad feeling, but as soon as I stepped into this gown, I realized that I had been waiting to feel ten feet tall. I looked long and lean and elegant. The dress wasn't anything I had imagined myself in, with very little detail and a simple design, but I really felt like the dress and I were made for each other - it wasn't overtaking me and it really made me feel like a beautiful, and NATURAL, standout!
  • When I tried on each dress, I closed my eyes and pictured myself wearing it at the alter with my fiance. I couldn't picture myself in any of them until I tried on my dream dress, and now I can't STOP picturing us on our wedding day!!
  • There wasn't really a "OMG it's The One" feeling.  It was in my price range, it looked good on me, and it had the elements I was looking for (slender silhouette, unusual neckline, not too much train).  It was a rational decision, not an emotional one.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I didn't know I'd found "the one" at first. I tried it and a few others on, my mom and sister took pictures of all of them, and we went home. It was when we were looking through the pictures later at home that we all realized I'd tried on the perfect dress.
  • I knew I found The One when I left the store and spent hours just day dreaming about the dress.

  • I didn't have a "the one" moment with mine - but the minute I walked out in it my mom burst into tears.

  • As soon as I put it on and looked in the mirror I knew. It was the first dress I tried on that day and I didn't want to look at anything else. When I turned and looked at my mom to get her opinion, she had a huge smile on her face and a hand on her chest, I could tell she felt the same way about it that I did!

  • I knew it was "the one" because it was the only dress that I felt like myself in. I was comfortable and didn't feel like I was playing dress-up in it.

  • I knew I was wearing "the one" when I walked out of the dressing room and my jaw dropped. It wasn't something I ever expected to love - in fact I was pretty sure I'd hate it - but everything was PERFECT and my FMIL kept trying not to cry (didn't work). I walked around the store in the dress for about an hour afterwards talking to everyone about how much I loved my dress, HA!
  • I had tried on 3 other dresses before "the one". The others were just so so, but as soon as I put on this one dress, I started crying, by myself in the dressing room. It was the first moment that I truly felt like I was a bride. When my family saw me in the dress, they all started crying too. That's when I knew that I had found "the dress".

  • I never got "that feeling", and was totally torn between 2 dresses. So I hauled my BM (the only one who I KNEW would give me an unbiased opinion) out to the shop and let her pick! It was definitely a good idea- now that it's in and I've had my fittings I can't imagine wearing the other :)

  • I knew my dress was the one when I could not stop smiling in it and I just wanted to keep putting it back on.

I knew my dress was the "one" when every other one i tried on didnt give me that butterfly feeling in my stomach.
  • It was the first wedding dress I tried on, ever. It was everything I was looking for and I loved how I felt in it. I tried on a couple more dresses, but I just knew the first one was the one- there was no need to try on any more dresses!

'I didn't pick the dress, the dress picked me"
    or
"I fell in love with a $5.00 dress"

We were out doing our regular shopping and decided to stop by a consignment shop to look for some lamps and there it was, just hanging up there on the rack under a $5.00 sign lol. I fell in love with a dress that broke all my "dream dress" rules. 1. It was all lace, 2. it was ivory 3. it was form fitting and 4. it was not floor lengh. If it had been any other dress, I would have said "how ugly" but for some reason I was just drawn to it. My FI saw it and the look on my face and said "just try it on" so I did and even though the tag said it was a size smaller then I am it ended up fitting me like a glove and gave me that bridal glow.

I knew it was the one when I stepped out of the dressing room and looked in the mirror and it was exactly how I wanted to look on my wedding day. The dress had every element that I wanted out of a wedding gown and fit me just right. I had tried on several gowns at other shops and I saw the one I picked at a trunk show on a Thursday, that Saturday I went in and it was the first one I tried on. I tried on two or three others but got back in that one and knew....This is it!

  • I found "my" dress the first time looking at and it was the fifth dress I put on.  I spent MONTHS researching designers and has this idea that I needed to wear a Jim Hjelm or Alvina Valente...The bridal consultant pulled a dress for me that I didn't even want to try on and it was it!  It was everything that I've envisioned for myself.  I knew it was the one by the looks of my mother, sisters and nieces faces.  They were beaming as soon as I walked out of the dressing room!!

  • i knew it was the one when i looked in the mirror and felt like a little girl again. i got a huge smile on my face and wanted to twirl all around the room.
  • I knew it was the one when people told me it was slimmings. That's all I needed to know. :)
  • My dress that was "the one" was actually my second one.  Initially I bought a dress that I liked, but now I know I didn't love it.  I honestly didn't think I was the kind of bride that would get emotional about a dress.  Turns out I couldn't have been more wrong.

When helping my maid of honor pick out her dress, she convinced me to take a quick look at the wedding dresses on sale.  I saw my dress on the rack and I audibly gasped in a way that shocked me.  The dress ended up fitting like a glove and it was as if the whole world stopped around me once I put it on.  It was "THE ONE"!

  • I knew my dress was the one as soon as I walked in the boutique to try on dresses for the first time. I actually saw someone else trying on the dress when we first walked in and I was amazed by how gorgeous the dress was. Once I put it on, I knew that it was "the one!"
