Shop first/Think later - Groom's Attire Brain-fart

So I had custom made collar stays and cufflinks made for my husband-to-be for our upcoming wedding.  And THEN I started thinking all the logical questions that probably should have come first. He's probably going to need a special dress shirt that will accomodate such man-bling. So I went and checked his current dress shirts, not a single one has little pockets for collar stays, and they all have barrel sleeves (which can not accomodate cufflinks). So now my dilemma is WHERE will I find a dress shirt schnazzy enough to have little pockets for collar stays and french cuffs for cufflinks  (Thanking my lucky stars he hasn't bought his suit yet!) The trick is, we are getting married in Mexico (in about  85 days!), he needs something light and breezy enough (linen perhaps) so he won't die during the ceremony (where he will also be wearing a jacket) or reception. He has a shirt he likes, not-so-plain and has a bit of white on white embroidery action going on on the front, great and casual-fancy for a destination beachy wedding. I think he is planning on going in that direction if he can find a long sleeve version....OR he might just have to suck it up and get a dressy white shirt. If it didn't cost an arm and a leg that would be most ideal. He says it's my job to dress him, so I can totally be a part of the shopping, and can sneaky get a look at collars and cuffs. Now I'm wondering if maybe I should buy him the shirt as well to accomodate my other gifts.
We live in a decent sized city I guess, but I am clueless on men's wear. Where do I even start!?
THANKS!!

  • Go to a local department store or even a place that just sells suits and tuxes.  Ask them what type of shirt would accomodate collar stays and cufflinks.  For cufflinks you will need a shirt with a double cuff.  As for the collar stays, it really depends on the shirt.  My H has some button down shirts with pockets for stays and ones without.  But I think that if you are buying a shirt with a double cuff it will most likely also have collar stay pockets.

  • I got FI cufflinks for Christmas. We got a very nice french cuff shirt from Men's Warehouse (which he loves) and a cheap one (just when he feels like wearing cufflinks for the hell of it) from Marshalls. Look aruond, you'll find them :)

  • H got his dress shirt at Nordstrom. They had a bunch to choose from and he got a white linen shirt too for our honeymoon. I bet if you go there or online, they may have something with cuffs for cufflinks.

  • We found a bunch of shirts in different styles at Mr. Formal. They were having a clearance sale and most were between $5-$15. We bought all of our ties for $2.50 each and got 2 shirts for $11.  IDK if they are in your area but maybe formalwear rental places near you also sell shirts?
