Ever tried steaming your own wedding gown?

I'm having a destination wedding and the hotel that is hosting the ceremony and reception recommends a company that can steam your dress before the wedding, but you have to ship the dress to them.  The idea of putting my dress in a box and shipping it totally gives me heart palpatations, so I'm wondering if this is something that I could do on my own with one of those home steamers.

Has anyone ever tried this?  I've got some test material as well from when they shortened the dress, so I'm going to try this out first, but there is definitely going to be a difference between a 5 inch piece of fabric and my dress.  Just want to see if I should abandon this idea altogether.  Oh, and my dress is satin!

  • I steamed my satin dress, and it was fine. We also used my steamer on all of the bridesmaids dresses too, as some of the girls traveled with their dresses so they were pretty wrinkly. The steamer did leave some darker damp spots, but they went away after they had a few minutes to dry.

  • Just use distilled water. Sometimes regular water will leave hard water spots. Just like ironing.
  • You can definitely steam the dress yourself!  Just do each layer individually and like PP said use filtered water.  It's not hard at all--I worked at a bridal salon in college and steamed wedding dresses all the time, it's easier than it sounds!
