What to wear to go dress shopping?

I just scheduled my first dress shopping appointment! What should I wear? Bra type? Shaper? Etc...help!

Re: What to wear to go dress shopping?

  • I have only been dress shopping once. I would recommend a strapless bra. The place I went to had them in stock, as well as shapers and slips in case you don't have any. I would recommend if you have long hair to bring a band to pull it back so that you can try different looks with different dresses (it can make a huge difference). Also, if you plan on wearing heels, bring a pair along to test out with the dress, but again, some retailers may have them in stock for you. Maybe just call ahead and ask?
  • A strapless bra? I wouldn't go and buy a special wedding bra until you buy your dress because you don't know which one will be the best for the dress you buy!

I will suggest that you pull your hair up if you are doing an up-do for the wedding though!

  • I tried on MANY dress at MANY shops before finally ordering my dress about 2 weeks ago (YAY!)

You definitely need "full coverage" undies, not a thong or boyshorts-if you're anything like me, you really don't want the sales lady who is helping you shift heavy white dresses over your head to see crack or cheek. Enough said.

Also, take a strapless bra or corset (if you have one) so you change into it before trying on dress. Make sure it fits well since this is the foundation of how the dress will fit. You may need alterations for your dress later, but having bunched up or ill fitting undergarments will hinder your vision of how you will really look in a dress. Believe me.

Personally, I took a skin tone (NOT WHITE, it shows up horribly if it peeks out the back of your dress!) strapless wonderbra with a little push up. I also wore victoria secret body skin tone briefs so i would have a smooth shape under my mermaid shaped dresses.

I also took a clip for my hair (its just below my shoulders, but it kept getting in my way...plus i had figured id wear my hair up on my wedding day) so I could see what my necklines and shoulders would look like with my hair up versus down.

Hope this helps :) Good Luck!
  • If you have a strapless bra in a skin color, bring/wear that.  If you don't own a neutral strapless bra, my next vote would be one that has straps.  Yes it'll look funny, but seeing a color through your dress will be funnier.

DEFINITELY wear full coverage undies (since the consultant will be helping you in and out of the dresses), and those should also be a skin tone color.

I second brining something to tie your hair back with, not only to keep it out of the way, but to give you an idea of what the dress would look like with your hair back/up.
  • I also made sure to clothing that wasn't a hassle to take off, since I went to more the one shop that day. Skinny jeans and lots of layers can be a pain to peel off over and over again.

Also, many shops have a policy about wearing jewelry while trying on dresses (they don't want a snag), so skip the accessories.
  • I'd just take a strapless bra.

Ditto the PP who said to wear comfy, easy to remove clothing!

  • Definitely a strapless bra, and ditto on the full coverage underwear. When I went dress shopping I'd make it a point to wear funny underwear, like rainbow leopard print or hello kitty. I figured if people were going to see me in my undies, it might as well be entertaining. ;)

Oh yeah, definitely easily removable clothing.  I don't believe I skipped saying that!  I actually wore a sun dress and flipflops since we were shopping in June, so that made life a WHOLE lot easier.
