Dress shopping overseas???

Hi All,

Don't really know how this works!! I live in England and am getting married Aug 6, 2011 in Michigan. But we are moving to Miami in December of this year. (complicated)

My book says I need to get a dress 9 months before or earlier....so by the time we move to Miami, it will be too late. How does this work exactly? Can I buy one here? What about the later fittings?

I am finding the planning to be too much so thought that I would try to get some answers here....Thank you!!!

Re: Dress shopping overseas???

  • I think it would be better to get a dress once you make it to the states. I would think transporting it back and forth would be a nightmare.

The time it takes for a dress to arrive depends on the designer. While some take up to 9 months, others can deliver in under 4. Your bridal shop will be able to clue you in to which designers can deliver on your schedule. You also have the option of buying off the rack from David's Bridal, Alfred Angelo, department stores, and boutique stores like J. Crew. You might also be able to talk a shop into letting you purchase a sample dress, so that you don't have to wait for a new gown to be cut for you.

Whatever you decide, just make sure that you'll have the dress a  month or before the wedding so that you can complete any needed alterations. Good luck in your search!
  • If you have the cash you can rush almost all designer dresses, so 8 months should be more than enough.  With out rushing 8 months is more than enough for most designers.

I agree you should be able to wait until you get her to get the dress, traveling overseas with a dress may be more work than it is worth.

If you want to go with family in England that might make waiting a bit more complicated, but if that isn't important, I would wait,

If it is, I would look at designer you can buy in the US but go looking with the fam right before you leave, then buy in the US.

  • With the exchange rate, I'd wait until you were here. Once you're here, go ahead and make some appointments ASAP- and let the salons know your time limit- honestly I think you'll still be spoilt for choice!
  • I agree, I would wait till you were here in the states to buy a dress.  Sometimes you can get lucky with an off the rack gown and it fit you perfect.   I bought my dress at Brides against Breast Cancer and it fit like a glove.  All it needed was to be cleaned (one month)  This is a national org that holds events city to city selling dresses from Kleinfeld in NYC donated by big name designers.   I bought  kenneth Pool for 90% off!  check it out, cant hurt   Good luck!
