Engagement Ring question

Hi ladies,

I'm not sure if this is where to post this, so if you know a better board please let me know.

FI and I have been engageded now for two years. Originally we did not go with a diamond for multiple reasons. One, being ethical reasons. Now my grandmother recently passed away and we recieved her engagement ring. I would like to get it reset because the band and prongs are severely worn. I have looked around a lot and found a ring that I really like from Brilliant Earth.

In order for them to reset the stone into a ring from them they want me to send the diamond to them.

Has anyone had any experience with sending out a diamond, whether to this partiular company or just in general?

I'm just nervous about sending out my grandmothers ring. They want an appraisal for the ring and said that I would need to insure it to send it. But they also want me to sign a liability waiver in order for them to work on it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

TIA

Re: Engagement Ring question

  • When you get a legitimate appraisal report it should include a "fingerprint" (location of inclusions, scratches, etc--none are alike) of the diamond and all its measurements so you wouldn't have to worry about the diamond secretely being swapped out or whatnot.  You definitely need to insure the diamond.  Is the liability waiver that they are not liable if the diamond is damaged while they work on it?  See if the jeweler's insurance or your own insurance of the diamond will cover if damage occurs this way.  I imagine that if it gets lost of stolen while at the jeweler their insurance would cover that.  You will probably also need separate shipping insurance from fedex or whatever traceable method you use to send it, but see if this is covered in the policy/rider you will get to cover your diamond.

  • Honestly, I would be very hesitant about sending out my grandmother's diamond as well.  Is there any way you could use a local, brick and mortar jewelry store?  Maybe take the picture of the ring you are envisioning and the diamond and see what they can do?

  • I would think about getting insurance on the ring, or have the diamond pulled from the setting and have insurance put just the diamond incase anything happens to it while a jeweler is working on it. Jewlers mutual will insurance loose diamonds.
