What is standard length?

Does anyone know what the standard length of a wedding gown is? Specifically a Maggie Sottero?  I know they are usually kinda long, and my Alfred Angelo bridesmaid dresses are floor length and she said as is they'd be the right length for someone who is 5'9" with shoes. Does that sound pretty standard?

Re: What is standard length?

  • My Maggie was super long. I don't know exactly, but I ordered mine in a custom length, with 2 inches cut off the bottom, because my dress had a lace overlay that would have been very difficult to hem. I was right around 5'9 in my heels, if not a little taller, and it fit perfectly.
Now that I've typed that, I feel like I've read that standard length would be for someone who is 5'11, and that is right on with my dress and the custom length.

  • wow! I'll definitely need to get mine hemmed. Wish I would have thought of that when I was ordering! Thanks :)

  • It seems like no matter what you specify for the length of your dress, it will be too long and have to be hemmed. It's almost like a racket, ensuring hefty alteration fees. This is one reason it's very risky to order a dress with a scalloped lace hem, how on earth could it be shortened?

When my daughter got married last year we had lots of problems with alterations. The seamstress wanted to hem the dress so it would've dragged on the ground. We had to get "tough" with her to get the dress hemmed to a reasonable length, a couple of inches off the ground. The dress still dragged on the sides, but at least my daughter wasn't tripping over the front of it.

Be sure to budget at least $200 for alterations, my daughter's ended up costing $250 for hem and bustle.

  • I didn't have a Maggie, rather a Casablanca, but mine didn't need to be hemmed at all. With my 2 3/4" heels it was perfect lenght. I'm 5'6" without heels.  So the 5'9" sounds about right.

  • I had mine custom made, but Maggie should have a size chart.  I was told that up to size 12, the standard hollow to hem is 59 inches.  12 and over I think it goes up to 60"  That's pretty long.  If you can order hollow to hem, that's really the way to save hundreds on alterations.
