Unique Flats for B & BM's

Hey!  I'm looking for suggestions and recommendations on cute, unique flats for myself and my bridesmaids.  My G and I are the same height (5'3"), as are his 2 brothers... so my G said I can have pink flowers and he'll wear ties/vests with a little pink in them --- so long as my BM's and I all wear flats so we aren't taller than him and his GM's.

Haha sooooo... I'm looking for cute, affordable flats - preferably ballet flats, since the wedding is in November.  I'm willing to do a little DIY with some cute rhinestones or little flowers, but if anyone has some websites where I can look for the shoes themselves, that would be really great!  Thanks!

Re: Unique Flats for B & BM's

  • Please don't dictate your wedding party's shoes.  What is comfortable for one person may be painful for another.  Give them a neutral shoe color or at most, ask them to wear, say, silver ballet flats of their choice.
  • I agree. Flats don't automatically equal comfortable--everyone's feet are different. it's okay to pick a color or give some guidelines, but let them decide what works for them.
  • Steve Madden flats are usually comfy and affordable, plus re-wearable.

What colors are you looking for?
  • I actually just bought these in clear

  • Have you ever worn PVC shoes?  I actually wore a pair of clear heels as part of a Cinderella costume, and they were AWFUL.  They don't breathe at all, and as my feet sweated, the shoes got cloudy.  So, so bad.

I think it's kind of weird that your FI is that insecure about his height that he doesn't want anyone there to be taller than him...

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I think it's a little harsh to call her FI "insecure." I can understand his concern with a bunch of girls towering over him in all the wedding party photos. If this was the bride making a heel-size request, most people would give her the leeway to do so. It's his wedding too. And I don't think it's inappropriate for the bride to ask the girls to wear flats, or even a particular pair of shoes so long as they aren't very expensive - they're already buying their dress! Maybe you could give them the shoes as their bridesmaid gifts. Anyways, I'll keep a lookout for cute flats, but do make sure you talk to your girls and make sure they're prepared to spend the extra money. Otherwise, you should just stick with requesting a flat shoe (maybe a particular color) and letting them do what they'd like.

Not so much.  You'll be looking at faces in your wedding pictures, not heights.

The problem with shoes is that unlike a dress that can be altered to fit, shoes that are comfortable for one can be painful for another.

If something is required to be worn to a wedding, it is not a gift.  It is a wedding related expense.

This.  It's okay to request a certain color and at most a general style.  That way your BMs can find something that is comfortable for them, fits in their budget or is already in their closet, and they may be able to wear the shoes again as long as you stick with colors like black, white or metallics.
  • I picked out the shoes for my bridesmaids, (based mostly on a request by our venue) and none of them minded at all. I think it's understood between girls in a wedding that you will do what the bride asks of you for her wedding and then for yours she'll do the same.  If you stay around a price point that works for all of them and get a cute pair of flats that they can re-wear, you'll be fine.  Also, not at all sure what your wedding theme and attire is like but Puma has some great, really comfortable flats!  I know it's odd but I've seen a lot of people get the ballet flat that has the sequins on them...there's a white pair and a black pair.  Good luck!

No. It's understood that you'll stand up with her and support the marriage, not that you'll be her personal barbie doll. If I were asked to wear shoes that were not comfortable for me, I would drop out of the wedding rather than risk injury to myself. Even many of my closest friends don't know that I have a birth defect in my feet that leaves me unable to walk in many types of shoes--some kinds of flats are excruciating. You just never know. So let your ladies pick out their own footwear with some guidelines. It's okay to say, "please wear flats if you can". It's not okay to say, "you must wear THESE flats".
  • You guys are funny.  It's amazing how a very simple request for shoe recommendations causes pseudo-catty remarks.  Please don't assume you know everything about me, my relationship between myself and my FI, and/or my friendship between myself and my BMs based on one quick, simple discussion board post.

**Note:  I am giving my BMs guidelines and options - THEY make the final decision.  THEY chose their BM dress.  My BMs are not the type of girls who are going to let anyone walk all over them, including me, though I wouldn't do that to them to begin with.

Please only post SHOE SUGGESTIONS instead of picking apart my words.  Thanks.

PVC shoes give me blisters, but the clear ones were very pretty!  The Puma idea would probably work better, since the shoes are a bit more flexible...  I'm looking for either black or pink, I think.  The dresses are black.  I thought about doing flip-flops, but it's November and there'll probably be snow on the ground.  That, and I'm not a fan of the flip-flop sound on the way down the aisle.

  • Specify a color and mention the flats idea, but don't force them into it.

If your FI has a problem with women being taller than him, then that's his own issue. If he's that adament about it, then tell him to talk to your BMs about it and see what they say.
