Scheduling an appointment to go dress shopping soon!

Hi ladies!
I am new to this board! I have been lurking as I get ready to go dress shopping :) My name is Christine, FI and I got engaged November 2011 and are getting married April 5, 2013. I am in the process of scheduling appointments to go dress shopping. I am so nervous and excited, but wanted to hear any advice  that you lovely ladies had for the first time trying on dresses!
Thanks  and can't wait to share with you all!

Re: Scheduling an appointment to go dress shopping soon!

  • I printed out dresses that I loved to give the staff an idea of the styles I liked.  I also brought my own heels.  (I like to wear high heels and I have small feet.  It just made me feel more comfortable)

And be open to trying on something that you may not love on the hanger.  Hangers don't do some of the most beautiful dresses justice.

    Good Luck!!!!
  • Listen to Milk Duds! Also bring a hair tie, a bottle of water and a small snack, but the time I finished I was sweaty, thirsty and hungry!

    Have fun!

  • Def bring water, a strapless bra and heels! I had pictures on my phone of some dresses I wanted to try (I checked with the shops first to make sure they had the designer or specific dress). I did not cry when I found my dress but I knew it was it. I tried several others on after it and nothing compared for me, so don't get worried if you don't get all hysterical like on SYTD. Be open to trying things on from the consultant. And have fun!

  • I'm in the minority in that dress shopping wasn't as awful as I expected, but wasn't really fun. My advice:
*We knew my cousin 1,000 miles away wanted pictures, so we made sure to bring a camera we could upload from (We don't have fancy cell phones; we don't text photos)
*If you want sleeves, or, I imagine, anything very different from what you've seen in ads, call ahead. The largest not-David's salon in the region only carried 1 dress with sleeves. No, I will not have them added, though Elizabeth Smart's dress was lovely on her. [David's had 2] Saved a bunch of time by being up-front and not visiting salons that couldn't help me.
*Wear the kind of shoes and undergarments you expect to on your wedding day. For me, this was flats and pantyhose and a bra with straps (The things you can do when you wear sleeves...).
*Your mind may NOT change. After trying dresses on, I only more and more wanted what I'd wanted since I was about age 8, except with a shorter train.
*If you're willing to think outside the bridal salon box, you gain time. After my not-great experiences, and being told even the biggest salons have 0 like what I want, I'll order a dress from ebay or re-do Grandma's. That won't take the 6 months plus to come in.
  • Modist underwear, I worked in a wedding gown shop and have seen so many people wear thongs or g-strings and they are super uncomfortable with me seeing and they don't enjoy themselves as much for like the 1st half of the apointment so we have to go back and try some of the first ones again lol. And remember that the ladys who work there have seen many people, they won't mind if a breast falls outor something. Try on ones you wouldn't have really bothered with before, jut to get a idea, even I picked a way different dress than I thought I wanted :). And don't take to many people with you, to many opinions isn't always a good thing the first time out :)Good luck! hope you have alot of fun :)
  • My biggest thing is DO NOT go on a saturday.  Holy cow they were busy, I know shocker!) When a store is that busy its hard to focus because you just want to see what everyone else is trying.  I also agree on taking too many people, staying in your budget, and taking lots of lots of pictures!

  • I would also add not to bring too many people. Too many opinions can get in the way of what you really like.

  • Hi!
I went dress shopping for the 2nd time today. I have a blast when I'm shopping! Definintely go in with an open mind. My mom found a dress that she wanted me to try on "just for fun", it was nothing close to what I had been trying on and not something I thought I would like. Turns out its one of my favorites!

It's also more fun with less people. My mom has been the best person to bring with. She is honest and will tell me what she thinks(which is good).

And...bring a camera and ask if you can take pictures. Some will allow others won't. There was a dress I fell in love with in one shop and another similar one in a different shop. I had taken pictures of both and when I got home, I put them on my computer and compared them side by side. I found out one looks a lot better on me than the other one.

    Finally, just HAVE FUN:)
