Dying my wedding dress?

Hello everyone!! I'm having a simple ceremony in Las Vegas and currently my dress is white and I want it to be black. Is this even possible? and does anyone know the risks in dying a wedding dress? My accessories are black lace gloves, black combat boots, and a skull pin for my hair. I wouldn't be opposed to keeping the dress white if I had to but i think black would be really awesome. Oh and I'm also wearing black lipstick. Thanks in advance for your help everyone!

Re: Dying my wedding dress?

  • Pretty sure that the answer is "maybe".  The problem is that wedding dresses are often constructed of different types of materials, which may dye differently (some ligher than others).  So the result might be a mess if you just give it a shot yourself.

I'd probably suggest looking around online for professionals who can take a look at your dress and let you know if it's possible.
  • Ditto to find a professional in your area.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • I wouldn't suggest it. Personally I think black gloves, boots, and lipstick is enough black. Obviously you're going for the goth look but I think it would look more like a halloween costume than a wedding dress if you're wearing nothing but black. Get more black accessories if you want more black. Can you add a black sash to the dress? What about a black petticoat underneath? Could you have black lace added to the dress? A black veil?

There are other black options that would look gorgeous. You could pay to get it dyed which could be costly, and if you do it yourself you run the risk of ruining the dress.

  • Man-made fabrics, like polyester, have a real hard time holding a dye.  Natural materials are easier to color. If you have a lot of satin or polyester, I'd find a professional.  If it is all cotton or silk, it'd be a lot easier.

If you really want to use your dress, but it has difficult material, I second the PP- find some black lace and add it over your dress, or add a black sash or black accessories.

  • I'm sure a professional wouldn't touch the job with a 10 foot pole. Complex items, like wedding gowns, can have parts made of different fibers (lining, thread, embellishments, overlays) and each one will take dye slighty differently. Not to mention the fact that if it is a fiber like silk that does take dye well it shouldn't be sumberged and if it is a synthetic or blend it might not take the dye properly at all. Most  pros know better than to take the risk.
  • I agree that it'd be a bit iffy to dye it black, the dress could be ruined.

I went to one wedding where the bride added a black sash and had multicolored crinoline under the dress, it looked really cool and totally fit her personality. Another bride had black lace all over her dress and she looked stunning in it.

I'd suggest adding black accessories if you want more black.
