bridesmaids dress colors

how do people choose dress colors for bridesmaids?

Re: bridesmaids dress colors

  • I knew from the start that I wanted black dresses with green sashes. But I asked my BMs if they were O.K. with that ... I figured black is a neutral and universally flattering color, but if they had major objections then I would've looked around for something else.

I think the bride can absolutely have the final say over the colors, but I think she at least owes it to her BMs to get their input and, if possible, have them try it on first. Not only is it the considerate thing to do (especially since the BMs are the ones buying and wearing the dresses), but it does the bride no good to have the BMs in her Dream Color even if the BMs look awful in that color.

Plus, a lot of brides here have said that they originally intended on putting the BMs in one color, but they fell in love with another color once the BMs tried it on. So it really benefits everyone involved if the bride and the BMs can all have a bit of input.

  • I voted for your first option but it was really a combination of 1 and 2. I chose a whole range of colours for my wedding colour scheme (champagne, lime green, purple, fuschia) and then took the BMs shopping to see which one they would like best and which looked best on them. They left the choice up to me, so I chose purple because they have similar skin tones to me and I LOVE that colour on myself.

  • We had a black and white wedding, so the girls were in black.  Easy.  If I'd had something more colorful, I probably would have done a spectrum of shades of one color, so each girl could choose the shade most complementary to her own skin tone.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • My wedding is a week before Christmas, but I didn't want to do a Christmas-themed wedding with red or green.  I chose eggplant for the bridesmaids and as my main color because I felt it wouldn't clash with holiday colors, but also wasn't blatantly holidayish.
  • Honestly, it was the hardest thing for me to decide on out of all the wedding planning decisions. I started with wanting a Shimmery gold color, then went to a celery green color, then changed to a pewter, then landed on eggplant. I had to stop looking. I picked a dress i loved, color and all and just said thats it! i found the more i searched dresses online the more confused i got.

I originally picked burgandy for my BM to wear.  Then I decided I wanted them to each pick their own style, and the designers I liked didn't have big selections in a burgandy color.  We ended up with black -- almost every dress comes in black, so they ahd plenty of selection.

Oh, and the rest of my wedding "colors" are fall tones -- gold, burgandy, orange --- so black will look nice too!

  • I like teal!  We might go more blue or more green, but that's where we're starting.  My BMs all like it.
  • Couple of the above.  FI and I debated the color thing for awhile, and red was the color that we thought would universally look good on my girls, and go with our color scheme.  So that's how we picked.

  • I wanted navy blue so gosh darnit that's what they are wearing!  It was more about the colors I picked for the wedding.  My colors are navy and chartreuse and honestly that shade of green is not flattering on everyone.  I also love the way bright flowers look against the navy.
  • My favorite color is turquoise, but I decided against that. I chose deep red because I think it looks classy. Plus, I was able to correspond that to the red and white roses I wanted. So it worked out well.

  • I wanted kind of classic, neutral color dresses with REALLY bold, bright flowers.

The neutral color ("light mocha" ~ VERY light) flattered all the girls & I got the look I wanted with thhe flowers adding so much "pop."
