Bridesmaid Footwear

I am having a laid back beach wedding and my bridesmaids are going to be wearing flip flops.  I don't want them to be too fancy or expensive, so I'm thinking of making them myself.  Has anyone done this?  And if you have, do you have any sources or advice you can give?

Re: Bridesmaid Footwear

  • I would just go to Old Navy when they have a sale on their flip flops and buy them.  They come in pretty much any color you can possibly think of.

I would be afraid that if I tried to make them then I would do it wrong and they would break leaving the BMs with no footwear whatsoever.

  • Could you just ask that they wear any beach appropriate sandal in a neutral color (tan, silver, black)?

I think it's nice that you want to make them...but I think the BMs would much rather wear something they're comfortable in that they may wear again.

Thank you!  And they are all going to wear a neutral color & I want them to be comfortable, and they would definitely be one's they could wear again.  I was actually thinking of getting Old Navy flip flops & then just sprucing them up just a little bit.  I have been communicating with my BM's, and they are all on board with it.  I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions.

[QUOTE]Ditto Maggie. Old Navy flops are cheap and come in every color and size. That, or let them pick their own shoes. I have some serious flops and they are infinitely better than the Old Navy ones, I have hiked for miles in them.

They are called "serious flip flops"?

  • I agree wholeheartedly with Stage. I hate flip-flops and only wear them at the beach/pool but a very specific kind: foam wedges. I can't deal with zero arch support.

Keep in mind that if you are having the ceremony on the beach, sandals would probably be better.  Flip flops will throw sand up in the air and onto them.  Not to mention the awful flip flop noise.

I'd let the bridesmaids pick their own footwear.......you would be off the hook for paying for it!

I guess I should have been a little more specific, sorry.  It's at my families lake house.  There is a small beach where my fiance & I will be standing, but the bridal party will be standing just beyond the beach/sand.  So they will actually be walking on grass, or I'm thinking of an aisle runner of some kind.  Anyway, I thought about the flipping noise also.  Thanks for the suggestion.  I may go with Sandals.  I just haven't found any that I like to go with the dresses that aren't too fancy & aren't too expensive.  That's kind of why I thought about making them myself.  And I wouldn't be paying for them all myself.  The BM's all offered to pay for their own shoes, but wanted to know what I wanted.

An idea for your aisle runner.  Get some straw beach mats (however many you need to meet the length you need) and connect them together.  Very beachy, inexpensive, and then they can be used again whenever you take a trip to the beach!

Edit:  Just make sure to get some metal or wooden stakes to make sure that the mats don't move or fly away.

  • It will be easiest and least stressful (most likely) to just tell them the color you are hoping for and let them pick their own footwear.

For my wedding, the bridesmaids wore blue dresses. . . . I asked them to please wear silver shoes of their choosing.  My MOH wore a pair she's had for years that she loves, 2 BMs ended up getting nearly identical pairs of silver sandals, and my third BM got a pair of silver pumps that I personally thought were hideous, but she loved. . . . .everyone was happy and comfortable.

  • Please skip the matching footwear and just let them choose.
