Veil with my dress?

So my father expressed that he would like me to wear a veil, apparently it was a vision of his lol. I never had intentions of wearing a veil but taking my father (and FMIL) into consideration, I'm thinking about wearing one for just our ceremony which will take place in the Catholic church my FI grew up in.

Question is should I go with a long veil, short veil or skip out on it? The salon I was at only had finger tip or heavily embellished veils, none which I liked or even looked right with the gown. Attached is a photo of my gown and my top two veils, which do you think would look better?

Re: Veil with my dress?

  • If you're wearing the dress with the shrug that it shows, I'd go with the shorter one. If not, either will work, and I think think the formality of the dress would be complimented by the longer one. However, if you really don't want to wear a veil, don't. It might be nice for your dad, but if it wouldn't make you happy or if you don't like how it looks with the dress, then it's really not worth it.

  • I am partial to veils because I think that's what distinguishes the bride from everyone (and makes you feel different the day of your wedding than any other day you get to dress formal) but I think you should only do a veil if you really want one.  And I think they are both beautiful:)  Both would work depending on the feel you want (either more formal or more "period inspired")...

  • Both would be fine. I love your hair it is totally romantic.

  • To me it depends on both the formality of your wedding and of the space you're going to be in for the ceremony. I'm partial to a long veil with a big dress for myself because I'm getting married in a Cathedral, so it looks more appropriate. You'd also likely take off a longer veil either before or at the beginning of the reception, so I'd keep that in mind. Also, does your dad just want you in a veil the way most modern ones fit (on the back or crown of your head), or does he want you to wear a blusher as well? I'd wonder if that's what he's thinking of, especially if he'd thinking of lifting it at the end of the aisle.

You hair is going to look great! I do have a suggestion that might cost a little more but would still be cool. I've seen brides switch out a longer veil for a birdcage or a really neat sparkly or flower hairpin for the reception. I'm thinking of having a headband or hairpiece that I just pop on after I take the long veil off (because, from what I heard, it's a pain to wear a long one all night, people keep yanking your hair back every time they hug you).

I think that dress needs a long veil if one at all.

    The dress is stunning btw.
  • This is a tough one.  I was dead set on a birdcage veil for a long time.  However when I bought my dress, the sales associate put me in a long one and I immediately fell in love.  I think either would look good.  If possible, I would try on your dress with both options and see which one looks better.  You might be surprised.
  • Thank you for the input ladies!

  • If you don't want a super long  you could also go with a finger tip length, especially if you dont want to take it off at the reception. If you are afraid of it not going well with your dress, then maybe see if the salon or seamstress can custom make a veil with the same lace. I plan on doing that, then the veil matches the dress perfectly, lace and color.
  • Definitely long.  I don't think that dress is they type for a birdcage veil.  It's a beautiful dress.
