Custom Dresses

Anyone ever had a dress designed for them? I found the perfect dress online at Maggie Sottero and  my friend from work said that his mom could design the dress for me. I really want it but its very expensive so I was wondering has anyone ever had a dress designed for them?

  • Which Maggie dress is it?  Post it here and people might be able to suggest a similar gown by a more budget-friendly designer.

[QUOTE]The problem with doing this is that if you don't like the results, you will be stuck with it.  I wouldn't do business with a family friend, either.  Things can go wrong, and the friendship is ruined. Go to a salon and try on dresses that you can afford.  You can't choose a dress from an online photo.  They often look completely different in person.  Take your favorite photos with you to show to the bridal consultant, so she will know what you like.  Start with David's Bridal (very affordable) and go to a few other bridal shops, too.  You may just find your dream dress well within your budget. Daughter only tried on her dress because I picked it and asked her to try it.  It wasn't on her list.  She was stunned when she saw herself in the mirror.

  • I would recommend going in to a bridal store that carries Maggie Sottero and trying on a variety of gowns in this style. If you end up liking it, you can always check used dress sites like recycledbride and oncewed. And sometimes they've never even been worn!

  • have you tried that dress on?     Because honestly, you may hate the way it fits you.  I had visions of the dress I wanted, and none of the ones that I KNEW would be MY dress ended up looking good on me.
  • My closest friend tried this.  The main problem is who is doing the pattern, do they know sizzing and fit for a pattern.  My Cousin, who works for a designer in New York and graduated from Parsons School of Design, says this all is crazy as patterns are very hard to make.  It looks great in thought but making a gown is hard.
  • I fell in love with a Jim Hjelm dress (style 8801) and did a ton of research and talked to many seamstresses. I hired someone to create it for me and the whole process has been a complete nightmare! I ended up buying the real dress off oncewed.com anyway.

My Jim Hjelm dress is pretty simple compared to the one that you want. If a seamstress can screw up a simple dress, I'd really caution you against trying to replicate your more detailed dress. I'd suggest just biting the bullet and buying the dress (after trying it on of course) and re-selling it after your wedding to recoup some of your costs.

Best of luck to you! :)
