Dresses for short girls?

I'm 5'2" and weigh ~115 lbs, just wondering what neckline/silhouette/length would look good on me?

So far I've been looking at these two for the ceremony:

and this one for the reception:

Would these look good on me? Pic related.

I've been too scared to really think about longer dresses, because I don't want to drag them across the floor, trip on them, or just look even shorter than I already am. lol

Thanks in advance!

Re: Dresses for short girls?

  • I think that as long as your dress is fitted properly, you won't look shorter than you are. You look petite from your photo, so maybe shy-away from the super-pouf/ cupcake look. I like the second one, though, if you do want a shorter dress. BUT, if you're going with a short ceremony dress, why would you need a shorter party dress? I think it would be a complete waste of money for about 8 inches of difference.

  • Good point, but I do like the party dress since it's more fun and less formal. We'll see how it all turns out, but you're right about the cupcake thing! Thanks so much c:
  • Sounds like we have the same body-type.  I'm also 5'2" and about 105 lbs.  I have a short torso and a long neck & legs though so most people don't realize how short I actually am.  When I went shopping I found that anything that flared out too much was just too much dress for me.  So that was all ballgowns & even some fit & flares that had too much flare (I love the dramatic look of them, but I just couldn't pull it off).  I also found that satin as a fabric weighed me down whereas lace and organza worked better.  Try on longer dresses - they might surprise you!

One more thing - if you go for a mermaid/trumpet/fit & flare cut, make sure that they will make the dress to your measurements "hem to hollow".  These dresses are tricky on short gals like us because most designers will keep the flare at the same length and then just cut the bottom to shorten it.  So if it's supposed to start flaring at the knee, it may actually be mid-calf for us.  So because it's not hitting in the right place, it looks like the bottom of the dress has been chopped off.  You need to make sure that the designer can make the dress to fit properly because this is something that may not be easy to fix in alterations.
  • Be careful with tea-length dresses.  9 times out of 10 where tea-length is cut (which right around your calf area) it will shorten the look of your legs significantly.

I absolutely love the mori lee dress though.  Do you want a short ceremony dress? Or do you feel that since you are short you would be overwhelmed in a long dress?  If you were thinking of a long dress I would go with something that is form fitting and definitely not a ballgown because that would most likely overwhelm your tiny frame.

But I do have to agree with PP about the second dress for the reception.  I would pick one short dress that you love and wear it the whole night.

Here is one from Allure that I thought would look great on your tiny frame...

<div>Oh my GOOOOOD that is adorable!!! I love it! Thanks so much for that link! I'll have to show my hubby to be later when he gets home lol. </div><div>I was really unsure about long dresses, because of feeling overwhelmed just like you said. Also, my guy prefers something shorter, not sure why :p</div><div>I'll probably end up going with one dress for the whole night, that's wonderful advice and I'm on a little bit of a budget :u </div>
  • I'm your height, though a little curvier, and wore a modified A-line gown. I tried on some ball gowns that completely overwhelmed my body. I personally still wanted some poof, so we found a dress that worked for me.

Tea length dresses look awful on me, but as Lia said, they may look great you. Try it on before deciding anything. The Allure dress Maggie linked is beautiful. If short dresses are more your style and what you want, definitely check out that dress!

i'm 5'2 about 125 (athlete - woo!), and i went with a Mori Lee 2302 A-line gown.  Mori Lee is GREAT in that her dresses come in a 'petite' length, which was perfect for me!

the A line was slimming and elongating.  the beads on my dress helped too.  some dresses' details DID make me look short -- its all about finding the RIGHT one.  like PP said - tea length dresses are tricky. i've worn a few that made me look extremely short/squatty because they cut me in the wrong spot. i tried on a ballgown and well..... the dress ate me up. it was rather funny =)

something slim like a mermaid/trumpet/A-line dress would be best.
if you're set on short -- i'd reccomend knee length with heels.
