Which types of rings are most common?

I am getting married July I have purchased my wedding ring but I am stuck on what I should buy for my Husband.  I was originally going to buy him a white-gold wedding ring but the prices seem outrageous for gold right now.  I have been doing a lot of research on other metals, in particular tungsten carbide rings, that sells specifically mens tungsten rings.  Can anybody tell me if these are good wedding bands for a guy?  Or are there other metals that are less expensive than white-gold that will work as well?

  • DH has 2 rings. One is steel, one is Tungsten.  He loves them both.

  • My husband's is a mix of palladium, white gold, and stainless steel (in a style called mokume gane, which resembles wood grain.) http://www.etsy.com/listing/77962778/white-gold-and-sterling-silver-mokume He loves it and while we have no experience buying jewelry (my rings are family heirlooms,) we were really happy with our purchase! It seemed like a great price for a ring that is pretty much custom made. One of the reasons we chose not to go with some of the more popular materials for men's bands was because some of them can't be re-sized and we wanted to get a ring that had the potential to be with him his whole life. It's a personal reason and not necessarily the cheapest but I thought we did pretty good for our budget!

  • My FI is basically choosing his own ring. I *think* he got stainless steel. He has suuuuper sensitive skin so he is choosey about his metals, and he also prefers a softer metal because he works in a dangerous job where it would be easier to cut off if it ever needed to be.

[QUOTE]What does your FI want? Honestly, considering the price of my ring and wedding band, which was much less than most, I told H to pick out whatever he wanted and we'd make it work even if it meant cutting some corners in the wedding. He's going to be wearing it for the rest of his life too and I thought he should be just as happy with his as I was with mine. Plus, you can get a 14k gold or white gold band at Wal Mart for under 300. Under 200 even, depending on the width he prefers. However, if he WANTS an alternative metal tungsten, steel, or sterling silver are all good choices.

FI and I basically had the same conversation. He's the one who's going to be wearing it every day so it was up to him to find one he loved. We'd figure it out if it was over what we really wanted to spend. He actually ended up with his grandfather's ring (after his mother offered it, which was wonderful as FI was very, very close with his grandfather until he passed away a few years back) but if he had wanted an expensive ring, we would have figured it out.

But yeah, you can also find gold bands on amazon that are pretty reasonable, or you could hit up a pawn shop if he wants white gold. Otherwise, I'd let him go to a jewelry store/go with him to a jewelry store, and let him look at what metals he likes. It's his ring after all :)

  • I let my FI pick which ring he wanted.

He went with a tungsten and carbon fiber inlay ring.  It was pretty "manly" looking and on the less expensive side (only about $225) which was perfect for someone that was not looking forward to wearing a ring.  He then proceded to lose the ring this past September.  So now he is ringless until he buys himself another one :)
