My dress is too small.

I just got home from the seamstress with my dress and she couldn't zip it up the last four inches by the bust.  It's a side zipper with an elastic band inside to pull the dress together for zipping.  It's the biggest size they had in the dress and not only did it fit but I was able to move and sit in it at the salon.  The seamstress says there isn't enough fabric to let it out.  I even checked the tag inside to make sure it was the same size I tried on at the store.

I don't know what do to.  My regular work clothes fit easier and I've been exercising more than I was a month ago plus eating better.  I don't think I've gained enough weight for this to be a problem but I don't know what to do.

Should I search for a new dress?

I am sorry you your alterations went awry.  That's just awful!  At this point, I'd say to keep your eyes open for another dress.  Good luck!
  • You say the sample dress at the bridal salon fit you?
This may be a long shot, but would the salon be willing to swap their sample with your new dress?
  • Maybe they made a mistake. You must be so hurt right now, I would hope that you can bring it somewhere to get it let out if they can't do it.
  • sweetie, its possible that your boobs just got bigger. try having the store order a nother one. no matter how many paterns there are every dress is not cut exactly the same. its very possible that this dress was just cut on the inside of the line and the one you tried on was cut on the outside of the line. happens all the time at clothing stores, too of the same shirt in the same size and color are never actully the same size. i wish you the best of luck!
  • try to change the back style , such lace-up , it may work. Good luck !
  • Your best bet is to find a seamstress that can alter it for you, a gussett or corset back can be created, this exact thing happened to a friend and a talented seamstress worked on it, and it turned out perfect.  Not sure if you want to go thru the hassle of waiting for another dress to come in on time (risky, if you ask me) also matching fabric could be added to the sides to enlarge it.
    Hope this helps
  • Contact your salon and explain the issue you are having.  I had the same problem, and they had me come back in to get re-measured, as well as have the dress measured and looked at to make sure the dress was made correctly.  But, when I went in the dress magically fit!  It was just that time of the month and I was bloated enough where my dress was too tight.
  • Thank you!

You know what, I never even considered this time of the month could be an issue.  I wonder if that's the difference.
  • I got the dress at the BHLDN store in Chicago.  At the appointment, no measurements were made.  I tired dresses in size 12 and 14, the biggest sizes they offer.  The 14 worked out great.  It didn't cross my mind the sample could have been stretched out.  Thank you.  I will give the store a call in the morning.  I do have a reception dress that fits with no problem.  It's not what I want for the ceremony but if I have to, at least my shoes and accessories will look great with it.

  • usually the dresses will have 1~2 inch room for the brides to alter....
you may find a wedding store and ask them to help you
    usually cost  around $60
