IPod instead of Band/DJ?

Is anyone using their IPod for music rather than paying a band/dj?

  • I am! It works for us though, our venue has a mini-nightclub that we'll use exclusively.

Depending on where you are it might be a copyright issue, because it might count as public performance.

In Canada we have an organization called SOCAN, which collects and distributes royalty fees. If you want to use recorded music at your venue, one of the costs is a SOCAN fee, which covers royalties for the music you play. It seems to be a flat fee under $100 CAD for a wedding.

Anyways, that doesn't apply in NM but there might be something similar there.

A friend of mine did use a laptop with a huge music library and a couple of speakers, rather than hiring a DJ. It was good although I think she underestimated how much music would be needed for a five-hour dance, because there were some repeats towards the end of the night.
  • We thought about doing that, but you have to think of finding speakers & other equipment, and you're still going to need someone to MC, as far as announcing special dances, cake cutting, etc. If you have a (competent) friend willing to do that, and have a way to rent/borrow speakers & sound stuff, then go for it!
  • i have also heard of some dj's just manning an ipod. It is a whole lot cheaper and you are basically paying him to make announcements, manage the ipod, exc. That is what i am thinking of doing, they usually provide a sound system as well.
