Alterations -- near me, or near the wedding?

I'm a June bride and I bought my dress months ago from J Crew. It's currently in a box with future in-laws. I'm trying to figure out my timeline for alterations (Likely only hemming and cups in the top) and where to get them done, and have a general question.

I live in Boston, my in-laws live in Portland, Maine (90 miles away) and our wedding will be held halfway between these two locations (in Kennebunkport). Should I be looking to get my alterations done near my, or closer to them in Maine? I originally planned to get them done up in Maine, but I've had a hard time finding good recommendations, and I'm worried I won't be able to get up there during the week in the case that Saturday appointments are booked up. Has anyone else had a similar issue to figure out?

Also... any recommendations for either city could help make a decision! :)

Thanks!

I also bought a dress online from JCrew. I think it might be best if you just keep the dress with you and handle the alterations near your home. I'm assuming you're worried your FI might sneak a peek at it, which is why the dress is elsewhere at the moment?

If so, you can lock the zipper of the garment bag to the hanger. Or, just try not to worry about it if he sees. The dress will look different when it's on you on your wedding day, anyways.

</div><div>You're right on this -- we live in a small condo in the city and I couldn't really think of where to put it where he wouldn't stumble upon it. But it makes sense to keep it at his parent's house until I'm ready for alterations -- then, of course, the seamstress will have it for awhile, and when I get it back it will almost be wedding time anyways! :) Thanks for the help.

  • I agree with PP's, get the alterations done near you. Wait until a month before the wedding to start your appointments. I'd make at least 2. You can of course find your seamstress ahead of time, but don't start any work on your dress until then.
