Should I get a new ring?

Ok so here is the deal, my fiance gave me a gorgeous ring when we got engaged a little over a year ago,  Since I have owned it 2 side diamonds have fallen out even though it was inspected by the store (which is a global chain)3 months before they fell out. I have contacted the corporate head quarters and the nearest store and they said they have had some problems with that setting and I can go in and trade in my current ring for a new one. Should I just give up my beautiful ring that has so much sentimental value?  I don't know what to do, what would you ladies do if you were me?
Thanks

  • Your ring is defective. I'd get a new one.

I agree... if they acknowledge that they're having problems with that ring, they're offering to replace your ring, and they're a global chain, that means they're having A LOT of problems with it.  I would get the new ring.  I know how you feel about the sentimentality.  Maybe you can choose a new ring that will accomodate the diamond that's in your current ring.  That way you can have part of your original ring still there.  You could also create sentimentality with the new ring... Maybe make it a special time for you and FI to choose the new ring.... do it together, go out to dinner, make it an event.  It's just a new memory, and the new ring will still mean the same thing.  You and your FI are in love and are committing your lives to each other.  It's still a symbol that your lovely FI wants to marry you.

  • Personally, I can tell you this is something very similar that happened to me.

FI got me a beautiful ring its what I asked for (3 diamonds).  I was blown away....well one day shortly after I got it back from being sized I was starring at it and something looked funny.  All 3 diamonds are technically different sizes b/c no cut can be exactly perfect.  The two on the end are suppose to be almost exact in size.  There is a tolerence that is accepted by jewlers everywhere and if the diamonds are w/i that tolerence level then they can be classifed as the same size.  My jewley store likes to stay under that tolerence level--they have a more strict tolerence set by their corporate.  The funny thing to me was that one diamond looked way smaller than its 'twin'.  Fi and I took the ring back and the jewler on staff looked at it did his thing and came back and said we were right this diamond was overlooked and technically wasn't w/i the stores tolerence level--but was still under the national level.  They offered to replace it.  We compared my ring to the ring in the store that was the same ring.  Well all the specs were the same level (color clarity etc) but they were slightly nicer when compared to my ring (after they  cleaned both rings side  by side) After lots of thought we wanted the other ring....well to make me feel better they said they would hold my ring at the store for 1 week. If i changed my mind I could come back and get it. After a day or so we called and said we will keep the knew ring. I dont regret my deciision. I know this is a long relpy but i hope ite helps you with your decision!

The sad part: I 'mourned' my ring bc of the semential value it had b/c it was going to be melted down---the diamonds would be reused though so thats good! My old riing was sized and they cant resell a sized ring.

    Best of luck!
  • i would definitley take them up on that offer it is not often that they admit a problem.
  • 100% agree u should,  just think how bad you will feel when the stones do fall out and get lost, even if they get replaced u'll never look at it the same again. happened to me and i know i don't.

Yep! Have the center stone put into a new setting. Diamonds wont fall out of a well made setting. Just FYI national stores don't always equal quality.

  • Get a new ring. My moms wedding band was 2 rows of 5 small diamonds and every year she ended up losing at least one of them. It was a hassle. While she loved the ring, she took it in and got the diamonds channel set in a band and she hasn't had an issue at all. She said always having problems with the ring made her hate it! Not how you want to feel about a ring with sentimental value!

The reason the stones fall out is because the setting (or mold) of the ring is poor.  It's not evenly aligned and the stones will continue to fall out.  Get a new one.

ETA:  When I went into get my band they had me look at it under the microscope so they could show me that the diamonds were set properly and they were all aligned.  If the mold of the ring is off the diamonds won't be aligned and that's the reason they pop out.
