Flying with your dress

I live in NY and am getting my dress in NY but my wedding is in California.  I want to bring my dress on the plane with me.  Does anyone know if this will work?  I want to hang it on the plane?  I am flying Virgin America.  If they wont let me hang it, does anyone have any other ideas?

Re: Flying with your dress

  • You can call ahead and ask, usually they'll let you hang your dress in the first class closet. If not, just wait for everyone to put up their stuff in the overhead bins and you can just lay your dress on top of that. A lot of the girls on the Destination Wedding board have done this with no problems :)
  • I'm also flying with my dress from the East Coast to California.  Is your dress from a chain?  My store will steam it again for me for free once I reach California, so I feel a little less worried if I have to store it overhead.

I know a lot of brides who have flown with their dresses and like wngschic said usually the flight attendants did hang them up in their closets for them.  In fact, I just went on my honeymoon last month and on both flights there and back I saw bridal gown garment bags hanging in the closets.  And, in case you didn't get your dress at a chain (like gjones) you could just call a local bridal store in the area close to where your wedding will be and make arrangements ahead of time to either have them press or recommend a place to press your dress.  And, you probably won't need to press it before you travel so hopefully you'll just pay for it once anyway.  Hope that helps some!

I just flew my dress back from Cincinnati.  Unfortunately, it was a regional aircraft so there was nowhere to hang it.  I wound up laying it on a bed with white tissue paper over and under it, then rolling it before putting it in my carry-on which I had left empty on the flight out in case this was necessary.  Got it home and there were no wrinkles or creases.

A friend flew hers from Phoenix to Ireland but had to wait until she was at the airport to find out exactly how it would go in the plane.  The flight attendants put it in their closet but for most airlines, this is purely at the flight staff's discretion.
