Should I have my dress cleaned pre-wedding?

I was super excited to be able to purchase the dress of my dreams second hand. I couldn't afford it otherwise but a girl in my city was actually selling the dress I wanted in the color I wanted in my exact size. For a third of the price! Dream come true!

I had planned to get it cleaned and steamed before the wedding. She cleaned it prior to me purchasing the dress but it is still just a little dingy at the very bottom. Now here's the clincher - We lost our venue and have had to move it to our friends farm, which is actually what we wanted in the first place so it works out. But it is in the COUNTRY. We're talking a field in the middle of peach orchards. My dress is going to be drug across the ground and be totally dirty at the bottom by the time I even get down the aisle. So I'm thinking paying the $150 to have it cleaned first would probably be totally pointless? Even the pictures are going to be taken in a field and a barn. And that $150 will help a lot towards the cost of relocating the wedding. I want to make sure I don't regret it though! It's barely a little off at the bottom... but in certain lights you can see it.

If she already cleaned it, then I wouldn't worry about cleaning it again before the wedding.  You're right, your dress will get dirty at the wedding.  By the end of my ceremony and reception my hem was dark grey from being drug across the ground, stepped on, etc....but you can't tell in ANY of my pictures.   So unless it's really noticeable and bothers you, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I agree with Avion - I'd not spend the money to have it cleaned again.  My dres was filled with sand and the underside of my train was really dirty by the end of our wedding and AHR.  The cleaners got it all out, but unless you stand on a lilypad all night, yours will most likely look the same very quickly in a farm setting.
  • I agree with not worrying about cleaning the dress. But if you are having any alterations done, I might consider a quick pressing at the cleaners.

I agree, don't clean it just yet!
  • Awesome! I feel a $150 weight off of my shoulders now lol.
  • Congrats on finding your dream dress at a good price! Agreed with PP! The only thing I would check is whether or not you need the wrinkles steamed out. If you're not sure by looking at the gown, hang it up and take a few pictures of it with and without the flash.

    Congrats again :)
  • I need advice!  I ordered my gown from J Crew and it is that silk synthetic fabric called Tricotine.  I am looking for a good place to get it pressed before my 'big day'.  It is clean, but wrinkled.  I just want to be sure that the cleaners know how to work with this fabric and do it right.  Any suggestions?
