Cost of alterations?

I have only one had to pay for dress alterations and that was at Davids bridal on a bridesmaids dress, those small alterations cost me 80 on my 100 dress. I went to my first fitting today abs was tools it would be 200 for a hem, a bustle and a couple small things here and there. Can someone tell me if this is a good price since I have nothing to go on... Thanks ladies!

Re: Cost of alterations?

  • It depends on what your fabric is and how complicated the "small things" are.  DB is really expensive for alterations so if you're having it done there I would suggest finding an independent seamstress.  If you're already with an independent seamstress and this price seems high to you then find another seamstress for price comparison.

  • Mine cost $300. I needed a hem, bustle, the dress taken in, a fixed stap and cups added.

  • I've been quoted $250 to have my hemline pulled up, buttons down the back, straps off the shoulders, dress taken in, and having the bust enhanced.

  • I LOVE my seamstress. I found her on yelp. She's off Wilson Blvd in Alexandria. Look up Fashion Dream. I have a very complex Monique Lhuillier dress and I needed it hemmed and taken up in the mid-section because I am short-waisted. My dress was also a sample dress so it had some loose edges. She re-sewed the edges, took in my top, took up the hem, and shortened my mid-section all for $150. I was so pleased that I've been taking a bunch of random dresses to her that I've needed tailoring for awhile.
