Cost to dye bridesmaids dress?

my sister got married 3 years ago and I was her MOH and our two best friends were the BM. We had matching BM dresses from Alfred Angelo that we loved. Those same girls will be my BM and my sister will be my MOH plus one other friend. In an effort to help them save money I was thinking about using those old BM dresses and dyeing them. The are burnt orange and I need them to be black. Here is the dress.. http://www.alfredangelo.com/collections/productdisplay.aspx?productID=b1206d74-6c38-4705-b174-66d83ae96957&categoryID=772f03c9-de43-4942-bfa0-da77e21ebd65&pg=0&colorId1= Has anyone done this before? The BM dress should still fit everyone so I would only have 1 BM that would need to buy the dress and mint be able to find used since the wedding is still a year out. Does anyone think this would work?

  • To the best of my knowledge, if the dress is polyester (And most satin BM dresses are), you probably won't be able to dye them, and if it's possible, you run a high risk of ruining the dresses.

The plastic fibers in polyester/acrylic fabrics aren't porous and will not be very receptive (If at all) to dye.

  • If you're going for black dresses, then why not let each girl pick her own black dress to wear?   I was my sister's MOH, and she let us pick our own black dresses. Some girls wore dresses they already owned, and some of us went out and bought new dresses. The nice thing about black is that you know they'll get worn again.   And everyone ends up in a dress that flatters their individual figure and fits their style.

  • All of my BM have already said they have no problem spending whatever on the dress. They are all well off but I'm the cheap ass in the group. I'm the couponer and the only always looking for deals. I came up with the suggestion to dye the dresses but it looks like that won't work. I just really love those BM dresses and didn't see the point of buying the same dress in a different color. Thanks for the suggestions!
