dress question

I went for my first search for the dress of my dreams!  The problem......I know what I want but can't find it!  I live in Terre Haute, IN we have 4 bridal shops....I went to 2 yesterday and going to the other 2 tomorrow but they say that the dress style I want is rare....for all of you who have searched in bigger cities have you seen a dress that is a halter with a lot of beading and the ball gown style with the pick-ups?  The ladies said you can get a strapless with pick-ups which i tried on and i definitely want the halter!  If people have seen these, I will definitely drive to Indy for a search!

Which brands are you looking at? Have you tried looking at some of the designers websites before going shopping to see if you can find something that fits what you are looking for?

I would try to go to a wedding show if there is one in your area coming up (Seattle's is in Jan and it's HUGE). Also, I may try cross-posting this on your local board where they may be able to help a little more.

At my bridal salon they said they could work with the designers if there is a dress that I love but want some changes for. Perhaps they can contact the designer to see if they can make a halter top for you if you like everything else about the dress! Good luck!

Have you tried on various styles?  I ask because I was 100% sure I knew that I wanted a spaghetti or tank strap dress - until the salesgirl talked me into tryingon a strapless.  Guess what I ended up wearing?

It might be easier to find a strapless gown that a seamstress could make into a halter style.  Or, like PP said, have the dress shop ask the company if they can alter it to a halter style for you.  Or, try looking at BM or prom dresses.  Generally you can order in white, though it won't have a train.  Finally, you should also look on TheKnot if you haven't already.

Hey fellow Indiana bride! I just wanted to wish you luck on your search. It sounds like you're getting good feedback from the knotties I was in a similar situation as you. Lafayette doesn't have many bridal stores, so I ended up ordering my dress when I went home to IL over Thanksgiving. If I didn't find one there, I was also going to do the rounds in Indy. I'm sure you'll find something amazing! Good luck!

thanks for the advice....a few of the seamstresses i spoke with said they could put a halter on....just didnt know if it would look tacky or not....thanks again
