Guest attire - Sept. outdoor wedding

My brother's wedding is in late September and I am having a difficult time deciding what to wear. It is an outdoor ceremony, on a golf course, at 5 pm. The reception is in a barn at the same venue. I know the wedding won't be casual, but I also realize that a floor length gown would not be appropriate. I have been looking online, and found these two I like:

I had a third picked out, it was a sleeveless knee length dress in pink, but I just saw my size sold out.

I especially like the first because it is the closest to my style, and I can see myself wearing it again. Do you think the white would be innapropriate?
The second dress seems a little "dressier", but if it is appropriate for the occasion I do like it almost as much.

I am hoping to get some advice which will point me in the right direction. Any suggestions on a cute outfit? For what it's worth, I am in my early twenties, and am about 5'4" so I don't think these will be very short on me. Also, I do think I may be in some of the family photos.

Re: Guest attire - Sept. outdoor wedding

  • Even for a barn/golf course wedding, I think the first dress is too casual.  (Very cute, but too casual.)  I'd go with the second.  Especially since it's your borther's wedding and you're likely to be in pictures (and just generally have some attention on you), I'd really err on the side of dressier here.
  • I like the second one better for the situation, too. I think the first one could really be dressed up and be appropriate, but since it's solid white on top and that's what will show up the most in pics, I'd skip it. I mean, if the first dress was your only option, I guess you'd be fine. But the second dress is cuter, to me.

    This exactly.
  • Yep, I'm with PPs. The second dress is more appropriate for the occasion. I do like the first, but for a wedding.. and especially since he's your brother.. I'd rather go with the dressier option.

  • As much as I like the first dress, I will probably rule it out entirely. Thanks for the advice!
  • I may just be a 20-somethin' fuddy-duddy since no one else mentioned this, but even at your moderate height, these options look really short to me, especially if worm with heels.  While I know styles have gotten shorter the last couple years, the longer hemline still only reaches halfway to the model's knee.  IMO, my brother's wedding with grandparents present isn't the place to strut my stuff.  You can judge your family's attitude towards this better than I can.  If you're in doubt, run your final selection past your mom before purchasing.
