What to wear for Engagement Photos?

Having engagement photos done in Philadelphia in about a month, and I don't know what to wear! My FI decided he is wearing jeans and a nice dark blue sweater - so, casual but smart. I can't decide if I should also wear jeans and a top, or dress it up more? I have a very nice red dress that would look good - but do I want 50 photos of myself in that red dress?
What did you girls do for your photos? And do photographers usually let you swap outfits halfway through or am I stuck with one thing for all photos? Thanks!

Re: What to wear for Engagement Photos?

  • Call your photog. Some charge additional for an outfit change.

DH & I stuck to neutral colors (blacks, whites, greys, with jeans) but that's just our style. If wearing a bold color fits your personality, go for it!
  • I did 2 outfits.  One jeans & a top - the other was a casual dress.  Like PP said, ask your photog, but they also recommended to wear bright colors as they tend to photograph better.  It also helps you stand out from the background (like if you're doing photos in a park, green may not be a good choice since you'll blend in with the scenery).  But an eggplant or coral would look really nice.
  • This totally depends on where you are doing your photos, the weather, etc. You want to choose an outfit that you feel comfortable in and that flatters your body type and particular style. Also pick something in a color that flatters your skin tone and hair color--you really want to "pop" against whatever background you're in.

Check with your photographer to see if you can wear more than one outfit. Mine let me do three. I would try to stay as close in style to your fiance as possible, so since he is going just a step above casual, I would say a casual dress might be a nice choice.

  • I kept mine casual and relied on accessories/shoes to change it up.  I did some with a casual dress and boots and then I changed to jeans w/ a nice top & sweater; and then I changed to another top and did some with and without a scarf.  I also used casual boots and then cute purple heels to dress them up a bit here and there.

My FI did jeans with a blue sweater too; but had a brown/blue collar shirt under so he had some w/ the sweater and some w/o the sweater.  Casual, but still nice looking.

I did have a few options depending on where we were taking the pictures and my photographer helped pick what to wear. I also picked easy colors that coordinated with FI, but not so matchy, so it looked like "us" and not so scripted.  Wear stuff that feels like you so you are comfortable too!

  • my friend who is a photographer actually suggested wearing red or bright colors for better pics so I think the red dress is a great idea.  I wore a red sundress ;)

  • My photographer suggested wearing something I was comfortable in, that I could move in, that I wouldn't need to adjust every second, but it didnt clash with what my FI was going to wear. Also she suggested something that could be altered quickly that would look different, like a cardigan over a dress, then I could take off the sweater so it'd look like a different outfit without having to actually change. She also said simple solid colors work best on film, so nothing with crazy designs like stripes or polka dots.
  • He wore a t-shirt with khaki cargo pants and I wore black slacks with a plum tanktop and a white blouse. Our photographer asked us if we brought more than one set of clothes before we started, but we didn't bother.

  • My photographer only allowed 2 outfit changes. But to be honest, I don't think she cares as long as you don't keep changing outfits every 10 minutes. I say 2 outfits are the best since it's not a photoshot for a fashion magazine plus it'll be easier for you to carry.

We had our photos taken at a regional park so we had to wear something that can be easily changed among the bushes/trees. I had a dark blue dress w/ tights and boots. Some pictures, I wore my white scarf. Then the other outfit was basically a nice t-shirt w/ my tights and boots.

Here is a link that could help (hopefully)
  • We wanted to be comfortable and not overly trendy so we could feel good when we looked at them in 10 yeas. We did ours in a park. I wore dark jeans, a tan and white flowy tank top with a white and gold cardigan he wore jeans and a burgundy button down, and our daughter wore a white and blue polka dot dress.

  • Thanks for all the help ladies! I like the idea of scarves to change up the look. And I think that I am going to go with the solid color red dress and boots :-)
