Have you bought on line??

I've been looking at some BEUTIFUL wedding dresses online and they have amazing prices....Alot of them also have really good reviews?? It just seems to good to be true ya know? I found a dress online that I located a look a like finally in the store and there is a $600 difference!!! It has really good reviews but I'm worried...we're really trying to cut corners though...??! help!

Re: Have you bought on line??

  • What is the website? There are some legitimate wholesale sellers out there and some who sell knockoff gowns. With knockoff gowns, you never know what you'll get or whether it will look like the picture you love.
  • Ditto opalsky.

Have you tried looking for it on one of the legitimate used wedding gown sites or even at jaysbridal.com or netbride.com?
  • Personally, I am against purchasing something like a wedding gown online.

There were tons of amazing dresses online that did not look good at all on me!  I would go into a store and buy it that way.  I ended up buying something I never even thought twice about.

  • I shop online for almost everything, especially things like my garter, longline bra, hosiery, etc... but I would never shop online for a wedding dress.  Something like that is just too important to purchase online.  I don't mind paying a little more for a dress that I know is going to be a great dress with high quality.

That being said... If I was going to order my dress online, I would find an authorized retailer who would be selling the real designer dress, not a knock-off (probably why you found a $600 price difference).  I was looking at some PC Mary dresses and those generally run on the lower side of the pricepoints, so there are ways to save $$ and still get a designer quality dress with designer quality fabrics and seaming.

There are more, but these I can remember off the top of my head.

  • My nearest bridal shop is 3 hours away, so I've had almost no choice but to buy online since driving six hours round trip isn't much of an option for me for a number of reasons. The closest shop that is technicially a bridal shop is an hour and a half away, and I did go there but they had very few dresses and I didn't find anything I remotely liked.

What really, REALLY sucks about buying online is that you have to buy the dress in order to try it on. So I'm up to 3 dresses I've bought and need to return--which costs lots of money just to try it on. One I got from Romantic Gowns and I thought it was my dream dress, but ended up really disliking it. Mostly because of the style and things like that, but I did notice the beading was loose too--more than a few popped off. And first they sent me the wrong dress anyway, so I had to exchange it for a different one and pay the shipping for that (cost me $35 to send it back in the mail, and another $15 check for them to ship the next dress to me). It was very irksome.

You very seriously need to pay attention to their return & exchange policy. For Romantic Gowns, you need to call them for an exchange or return number within 3 days of receiving the gown, or they won't take it back. After that you have up until your wedding date to return or exchange it. However, when I got the second dress I wasn't sure if I wanted to exchange it or return it yet, so I got an exchange code but after I decided I just wanted to return it but they refused to let me do it with an exchange number instead of a return number (so stupid!). So I had to exchange it for another dress, which I am now going to return with a return number and hopefully get most of my $500 back from the original dress I ordered. Of course, there's a hefty "restocking fee", so I think that's something like 25% I wont' get back. Not to mention all the shipping fees I had to pay for. What a waste of money just to try on a dress!

So that's my experience with Romantic Gowns. They are nice, but don't be fooled by the salespeople.

I now have a dress from David's Bridal (ordered online) which I am going to return, I guess. I have no girlfriends or sisters here to help me decide and I can't tell if I like it or not, so I'm sending it back rather than keeping it. They do not do exchanges there, only returns. So I got a return number --again within 3 days of receiving the gown-- and it needs to be back at their return facility within 14 days of getting that number. IDK how much it's going to cost me to send back that dress, but it won't be cheap. If you send it back to them and you don't use a tracking system then they won't accept it either!

My whole experience in picking out a dress has been a very costly nightmare, and there's no end in site. It probably would've been cheaper afterall to just drive the 3 hours and get a hotel to visit bridal shops and then drive back, but hindsite is always 20/20. And that's assuming I'd find "the perfect dress" while I was there, and assuming it didn't cost an outrageous amount (unlikely from real bridal shops like AA's or DB's)

I hope you have better luck! Being a plus sized girl here--it's exceedingly difficult to find clothing that looks good or fits well, and I can just forget about buying clothes online and especially any kind of dress. I hope it's easier for you.

Bottom line: pay attention to the return & exchange policies, and weigh that in with how worth it you think it is to try the dress even if you have to return it.

    Good luck!

  • Has anyone heard of goweddingdress.com the prices are outrageously inexpensive. I tried a $4500 gown on at a boutique, and they are selling it for $279. So crazy, I know. I almost feel like it's worth buying it and if it's terrible it doesn't event matter because it was so inexpensive. Does anyone have any experience with this website?
