Just a question. Forgive my ignorance!

Yesterday I went to David's Bridal to try on some dresses. I didn't intend to buy a dress because I figured I'd only be trying them on and then move on to look at another place. I found a dress that I really liked and saw myself on my wedding day wearing it, dancing in it, etc. I ended up buying the dress and I felt so happy!

After telling my in-laws and friends about me finding the dress, some of them made comments like, "Are you sure it's the one?" "Maybe you should have looked more?" etc.

Was it bad that I found and bought the dress after my first visit? I love the dress but I'm feeling horrible because other people say it was too soon. I was happy with it but now I feel like I did a wrong choice because several individuals are saying it was too soon.

Has anyone else gone through this? Or have any advice? Thank you in advance.

  • Um, NO! (LOL) It is no one's business what dress you choose or how long it took you to choose it. I hear a ton of brides saying I bought the first dress I tried on and I knew it was the one. If you LOVE it, you made the right decision!
  • Thank you deanozzi and CMGr.

After posting this, I went around looking in the forum and read stories of brides that found their dress the first time they shopped, and I found myself feeling a lot better. I'm quite happy with my choice and I do feel lucky to have found the dress.

Thank you for replying to both of you and congratulations to your daughter, CMGr! :) It's such a beautiful and happy feeling planning to get married. :)

  • Your wearing the dress NOT them... It's Your day Not theirs... If your happy with the dress and that is the dress you see yourself getting married in congratulations you saved yourself alot of stress.  Everyone is going to have their opinion the only opinions that truly matter is yours and your other halfs.
  • I saw a picture of the dress I wanted online and so that was the first dress I tried on in the store.  I tried on about 6 other dresses but I ended up buying the first dress and canceling my appointment at the other store I was planning on going to.  When it's the right dress, you just know!

  • Yes! It's quite funny because the dress I ended up loving was the one I least liked online. The one I loved online was the one I disliked!

I kept telling my mum that it was funny how much I came to love the dress I didn't think much of in the first place.

  • No problem at all. We have all second guessed ourselves. Some, me included have actually bought a second dress because we second guessed ourselves. Not to scare you at all. LOL. (My dress was 9 years old because that is when we originally were going to have our wedding, Obviously, after 9 years my taste has changed.)

GOOD LUCK to you and I am sure you will look and feel beautiful!

I went into the store planning on buying a ball gown, and ended up purchasing a form fitted fit & flare. Haha when you know, you know! :)
  • You don't have to try on EVERYTHING. Sometimes you just find one. I bought the very first thing I tried on and only tried on two dresses because I knew that first one was right. Haven't had any regret or anything yet either.

  • It makes me so happy to hear other first stories. :) Thank you all very much for sharing your stories/experiences.

  • I also found my dress on a "trial run" visit to a sample sale- I was nervous about trying on gowns and wasn't sure how I'd feel with friends' expectations, etc. so I went to the sample sale by myself to just get a little experience and was fortunate to find one! I just sent a bunch of hurried text messages & pictures to a couple friends to get a little feedback before I signed on the dotted line, and went for it!

And yes, there are thousands and thousands of dresses out there, you won't be able to try them all on, you wouldn't *want* to try them all on! There are probably dozens that would feel great and are in your price range- so finding a good match is a fortunate thing, not need to question it!

  • I had a few dresses picked out off DB's website and it was the first dress I tried on. I knew it was the one but my mom urged me to try on another pick. I did and couldn't see anything but the first dress. In total, I tried on two, but I knew my first dress was the one.
  • I went to look at dresses with my Mom, kind of like a 'practice round' before the group outing to go look, 5 dresses in, I found the dress! Sometimes it just happens
  • I bought my dress on my one and only shopping trip out. I tried on 3 dresses that never made it out of the dressing room, and only 4-5 that I did show. Of those 4-5, THE dress was one of them. We left the store and went to lunch, and then came back and I bought the dress.
  • My dress was also the first dress I tried on- I tried on 4 others because I didn't think it could possibly be as easy as buying the first dress I tried on but nothing else came close and I decided to just go for it!

It's your day and as long as you're happy with the dress that's what matters- don't let anyone make you second guess your choice!

Congrats on finding your perfect dress!

  • I also found my dress at the first store we went to, and it was the 6th dress I tried on.  I'm normally the kind that hates to make a decision without looking at other options first, but I just knew I wouldn't find one I like better, and walked out of the store with my dress that day.

This was in August 2011, and since then I've looked at pictures, just for fun, and have never thought, "I wish I had tried on more."  It's always been, "That's pretty, but not as great as mine!" :-) Congrats on finding "the one!"

    THIS!!

I dont fell bad about not trying on more dresses. I saw one that had everything I was looking for. It was my 1st try, I entertained my group with other dresses but I wanted to stop at the 1st one. I cancelled my other appointments I had.

  • Honestly, I didn't try on a hundred dresses before making my decision.  When you know, you know...don't worry about what others say.  I've learned to tell people as little as possible because EVERYONE has an opinion!
  • I went to David's Bridal, too, in September when they were having their $99 sale.  It was my first time trying on dresses and I actually bought the first dress I tried on! (bonus.. it was only $99) If you love the dress then that is all that matters.  :)
