What are the MUST takes for dress shopping?

I am going for the first time to look and try on wedding dresses in a couple of weeks. Is there anything certain I should take with me? Certain bra? Spanx?

Any suggestions would be great! Thank you!!

Re: What are the MUST takes for dress shopping?

  • I would take a strapless bra and a pair of heels. Spanx are less likely to be helpful since you probably won't be trying on dresses in your size anyway.
  • I wouldn't even worry about heels bc the dress won't be in your size most likely.  I would only take a strapless bra.  GL!
  • I just took a strapless bra.  The other advice I have is not to wear any foundation/powder.  Odds are you may try on a lot of dresses and then you'll have to spend extra time worrying about your "face" rubbing off.
  • Yeah, the only reason I suggested heels is that sometimes bridal consultants will insist that you put on their nasty bridal salon shoes to "get the full effect". A couple of times I refused and went barefoot, but with the more pushy consultants, I wish I had taken my own.
  • I vote for strapless bra and some more modest underwear...no one wants to see a thong on someone.  Just my 2 cents.
  • Thank you guys so much. Full butt undies, check lol. I am actually having a backyard wedding, so I will be barefoot or have flat sandles on. And I would have never thought about not wearing any kind of powder, that is an excellent idea.

  • Have an open mind with different styles, do take a minimal # of people with you (too many opinions cause issues + an entourage is not really a welcome thing in most stores).  Most importantly- relax and have fun!  It may take you a while to find your dress..but it will happen.
  • Others have suggested no undergarment/spanx, but I disagree. As a plus size girl trying on dresses was somewhat trying at times, mostly because it was somewhat limiting; so my must have for try-on's was definitely my undergarment! Dresses that were barely my size slipped right on, and not just because the undergarment made me smaller but because the fabric of the undergarment was slippery/smooth... therefore, slipping organza or taffeta or whatever fabric was much easier to do than wiggly it over skin. Definitely a must have. I even choose that over a bra...
  • I agree that you should bring spanx.  I tried on a few closely fitting dresses in silk where you could see imperfections in my butt/thighs.  Trying spanx on with the dress would help you know whether that smoothing effect would work or not.
  • I am a plus size girl, that was the main reason I was asking about spankx. For the first time going, my Mom is the only one going with me. Thats mainly because my appointment is on a Wednesday. I have a very open mind, I have an idea of what I would like, but I want to try on as many styles as possible. Thank you guys so much for all the help!

  • Don't wear black bra or undies...they show thru and it's not attractive!
My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!
  • Since I'm going to be a bridesmaid in my sister's wedding coming this fall, I know she has tried on at least 100 wedding dresses. I have been going with my sister dress shopping for 7 months straight......and we're tired. Anyways, my mom's friend told us about this place near downtown Dallas called Dress My Way. I think they may have a Facebook page as well. You can design your own wedding dress. Me and my sister just had a consultation with them last Friday and it went great! We met with a designer and she sketched out on paper my sister's wedding dress as she was telling them exactly how she wants her dress to be. So anyways, the designer gave the sketch to my sister to take home and now we are just waiting for a quote. We're tired of dress shopping so hopefully this will work out......so far, so good. I'll give everyone an update of our quote.
  • I think you should bring a strapless bra, a camera, and maybe wear some jewelry that looks vaguely fancy/bridal. I found that that helped. Good luck and take your time! Having an open mind is great!

Oh one more thing: I agree that you should wear underwear that isn't black (it might show through the dress, depending on the dress) and underwear that you wouldn't mind the salesperson seeing, because a lot of times they will come into the fitting room with you and help you get the dress on.
