Groomsmen

We are having a ouside wedding at the lake with a western kick. How does anyone feel about the guys wearing black jeans, black boots a white pleated mandarin collar tux shirt with a rim of black on top, add the button covers and a vest to match our color of "wine", no ties. Im trying to find something a bit formal but more comfortable and casual. Does this sound ridculious?

Re: Groomsmen

  • Mainly, I think you should ask your FI and get his and his groomsmen's opinions on what they all wear. But here are my thoughts on some things:

I have a strong dislike for black jeans, so take this with a grain of salt. I think black jeans look super late eighties/early nineties, more of a dirty rocker than a western look. kwim? I actually think a really nice dark denim would look better if you are set on jeans.

Do the guys usually wear boots? They are super uncomfortable to people that aren't used to them, and nice ones can be expensive. If they do wear them, I'd ask them to wear ones they already own, or buy them ones that match.

As for the shirt and colors, I would probably go for a white shirt with a neutral vest--black or brown--and add color in boutonnieres and bridesmaids dresses. Non-neutral vests without a suit jacket, to me, look more like the guys got too hot dancing at the prom and lost ditched the jacket, rather than they were supposed to be dressed that way.

How about something like this, but with a wine tie and bout?

As long as your attire matches the level of dress the men have chosen (don't wear a ballgown if the groom is wearing jeans), I think you'll be fine.  I don't think you should be the one who chooses the gentlemen's attire, though.  That's up to the groom.
  • I don't care for jeans at a wedding, but that's me.  It's your wedding, for cripe's sake -- dress up a little!

As PP said, I think indigo jeans would look better than black.  If you are going to have them wear vests and no tie, I think a regular collared white shirt would look much better than a tux shirt, which is far too formal to wear with jeans.  PP mentioned boutinneres -- since the whole purpose of a bout is to be worn on the lapel of a jacket, I think they look very strange pinned randomly to a vest, so you might want to skip the bouts if you go in this direction.  And I agree that the vests should be a neutral color.

Bouttoniere is the French word for buttonhole.  A single flower was stuck through the buttonhole on the lapel of the jacket, like Nucky Thompson's red carnation on Boardwalk Empire.  Modern jackets usually do not have a button hole located on the lapel although some of the more conservative suits, like Brooks Brothers, do.
