Advise on when to change into Reception dress...

I have a beautiful gown I am wearing for the ceremony and pictures, then we go up to the reception. I want to change into my reception dress at some point for the remainder of the evening, definitely before the first dance.

Some have given advise of changing before making grand entrance to reception. Some say wear the "main" dress as long as I can, and give guests a chance to see it up close as I mingle before changing.

The ceremony dress has a very long train, and if I do keep it on for awhile, I will have to have the seamstress add the hooks to bussle it. If I change right away, that won't be necessary.

What do you ladies think?

  • You should just change before entering the reception.  If you wait then you'll have to leave you reception and, trust me, it's hard to get away from your guests at the reception.

  • Usually the first dance is pretty soon after the couple is announced. I think it may make a weird gap in your reception if you enter in the ceremony dress then disappear to change before the first dance. Especially because that's when everyone is going to want to congratulate you!

I agree. We had our grand entrance into the reception, then went right into the first dance. I think it would be a weird time to leave to change. And it will take a while too, it took me forever to get out of my dress.

  • If I change into a different dress, it will be when I can't stand my wedding dress anymore. So it will be later in the evening probably.

In your situation, I think it would make for pretty pictures if you had your wedding dress on while enjoying your first dance.

  • Lots of ideas, Thanks.
After we are announced, dinner will start to be served. A 4 course dinner, toasts, THEN the first dance. My ceremony dress is poofy, with a large train, so that is why I'd change into the Reception dress before dancing starts. It is more form fitting, and I am having the train taken off, to make dancing the entire night more comfortable. Both are beautiful in their own way. (Story behind 2 dresses is: I had picked my dress, got the wow factor and everything, THEN, we won a wedding that included a free wedding dress, so I picked a totally diferent style, with the intention of making it the Reception dress, because I loved my dress too much to take back)
