Buying A wedding dress online....To do, or not?

I was looking into ordering my dress online because it ends up being ALOT less than buying it in the city. (Like a few hundred dollars less).

My question is, should I order is a few sizes to big so I can get it altered?
Is there a limit of how big I can go before the seamstress CANT alter it?

Thank You

  • Check out your website carefully--are they selling the actual dress, at a discount, or a knockoff? If the website is selling knockoffs, it can be hard to be sure you're getting a high quality product, so get lots of customer feedback before purchasing.

If you're looking at buying the actual dress, netbride, Pearl's Place, RK Bridal, and Jay's bridal are all reputable dealers.

As for sizing, check the manufacturer's size chart, and order the largest size corresponding to your measurements (like if your chest measures a 6, and your hips measure an 8, order an 8). Most seamstresses can handle altering a dress down by about two sizes; more can be difficult.
  • I ordered mine from Jay's Bridal and had great service with them.  I followed the sizing guide and ordered for the biggest size for me (which was my hips) because everything else can be taken in.  I wouldn't order sizes bigger than you need because you'll just end up paying more for the alterations and it can really mess up the shape if they have to take it in too much.  Just take your measurements and order what it says.

On Jay's website, if you have questions, you can talk to a live consultant and they can advise you on what to do.
