David's Bridal vs. More Exclusive Store?

Sooo... I went to David's Bridal with my mom to get some ideas about dresses.  I never had an intention to buy a dress there for a lot of reasons, but I wanted to get some ideas of the style I would look good in.  While I was there, I found a few dresses that I really liked and that I thought looked really good on me.  I am toying with the idea of buying one of them after I bring my sisters to see and help me pick.  My mom wants me to go to a more exclusive shop and try on more expensive dresses.  I watch "Say Yes To The Dress" all the time, and honestly am not sure that a more expensive dress would actually be better, except maybe in my mind, knowing it cost more.  I should add my parents are paying for the wedding, and money is not an issue, I just don't see spending a lot more it if I like the less expensive one.  I felt good and I feel like as long as it is altered really well no one will know the difference.  On the other hand, I do not know much about dresses, so any thoughts are very welcome.   Does anyone know what the difference would be and would people really think the dress looks cheap?

DB has some very nice dresses and I wouldn't say they are cheap looking. I just did not find "the dress" there. We did, however, get the BM's dresses there and we haven't had any problems or anything. The only thing I would advise you on is that DB salespeople are on commission, and the saleslady where we went was quite pushy. We then went to a bridal shop and I ended up finding my dream dress there. The main difference between designer and DB is"

-DB you could buy right off the rack
-they are not hand made like designer gowns
-depending on where you go you may not get great advice

And by advice I mean the style of dress that suits your body type, etc. The girl where I bought my dress at the bridal boutique was very knowledgeable whereas the lady at DB just kept saying things like "its looks beautiful, or I think that's the one" Of course this won't be a problem for you if you already know what you want ahead of time, ie: fabric, cut, style, etc. Good luck and have fun!
  • Thank you for the advice everyone!  I will go and see what else is out there, and I can always go back to DB.  I guess I didn't even realize how many options there were for me, glad to hear that some people have had great expiriences at DB to :)  Thanks again!

Actually, I did find a difference in the quality of some of the David's Bridal gowns, and gowns from actual bridal boutiques. I found that the designer gowns at the boutiques they put together better and most of the gowns had better detail. I can't completely dis David's Bridal though, because sometimes what a bride wants is a simple gown. So yeah, definitely try on gowns in both and see what feels right to you.

I've heard positives and negatives about DB.  I, personally, never wanted to go there.  I went to a local place and received excellent service for my gown and my BM gowns.  And my dress (Mori Lee 2105) was less than $600 at a local shop.  My mom's aunt works for DB out in Idaho - and even she wouldn't recommend DB.  We asked her if all of the rumors are true...(quality of dresses, amount of mistakes on orders, ordering the wrong dress or sizes, dirty dresses, etc.)...and she said yes.

  • Thanks everyone!  I actually went dress shopping again last night at the Macy's Bridal Salon and found one I really love!  Now it's just deciding between White and Ivory!  Thanks again!
