Plus Sized Brides & Designer Gowns

Do most higher end designers of wedding dresses (Vera Wang, Kenneth Pool, Priscilla's of Boston, Reem Acra, etc etc etc) limit their gowns to the smaller sizes?  I'm about a size 12-14 after losing about 75 lbs, which is great, but I fear I will still be limited to David's Bridal or Alfred Angelo only since I'm probably a 16-18 in dresses (I'm guessing.. I"ve heard two sizes up is normal).

I'd love any suggestions for designers who may accomodate someone my size.  I really didn't see anything at DB or from AA that I liked.  Thanks.

Re: Plus Sized Brides & Designer Gowns

  • I'm a size 10 to 12 and there were several designer gowns that I tried on that they still had to clip a little bit to fit me because they were too large. Some I was too big for, but most either fit or were too big for me. I did find that most of the Allure gowns I tried on were too small for me, but not so small that I could not get an idea of what they would look like.
Disclaimer: Please excuse the above comment. I'm probably freaking out because there is less than one month to go. Thank you.

  • Ever seen Say Yes to the Dress? They fit a lot of plus-sized brides for designer gowns.

It's possible you may have trouble finding samples you like in your size, but what they can do for you is put you in a gown of the same silhouette that does fit, and then hold up the gown you like to give an idea of how it would look in your size.
  • I wore a Maggie Sottero in a size 16.

  • Don't rely on DB to have what you want. I wanted a mermaid gown, and I am about your size which translates into a 14w-16w in DB. They did not have a single mermaid style in my size or even close for me to try and put on. The selections in those sizes were quite limited. They all seemed to be mostly a-line with an occasional ballgown.

  • Check out Alice Padrul Bridal www.alicepadrul.com , she did design a lot of gowns in size 14-16. Good luck.
  • My (plus sized) gown was Demetrios (not as "high end' as Pool, Wang, etc.); Demetrios is really high quality & has a wide range of styles. Prices vary, of course, according to how elaborate the dress is & what materials are used.

I think they have some beautiful dresses. I kept leaning toward Demetrios dresses & all were available in plus size.

  • Having been on the "dress hunt" for a few months, I'm confident you'll be able to find something you love.  A couple of the higher end designers that caught my eye were Jim Hjelm/Alvina Valenta and Paloma Blanco and I'm pretty sure they both have sizes that will fit you.  My major disappointment was that J. Crew has nothing above a 12 or occasional 14...and I love a couple of their dresses!

  • I don't know what your budget is, but if you can afford them, Henry Roth and Alita Graham both make GORGEOUS plus-sized gowns (I'm pretty sure Henry Roth is exclusive to Kleinfeld though).
