Bridesmaid dresses: Is it ok for them to wear black?

I wanted to have my bridesmaids in black dresses with a red ribbon on the waist, but I am being told that no one is supposed to wear black on a wedding. Is this more of an older custom that is going downhill, or is it really important that I don't have them in black? Advice please!

  • That's an old "custom" that doesn't really matter anymore. My Stepmom wore a black dress to my wedding, the groomsmen are all in black most of the time...and I've seen plenty of bridesmaids in black dresses that looke wonderful. Go for it!

  • old custom - there are tons of BM dresses in black. Black is very popular, especially for formal weddings.
  • my bridesmaids wore black and it was so pretty!!! i used really bright flowers- hot pink, orange, yellow, green- and they really popped against the black dresses.
  • My BM are wearing black and they like it because they're more likely to rewear the dresses.

  • I've worn black BM dresses in two weddings and it has looked lovely.  No one really adheres to that old rule anymore.
  • Black is probably the single most popular color for bridesmaid dresses right now.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • It is a VERY old custom, and I agree with all the prior posters. My attendants will be wearing black, and the nice thing is that I'm letting them pick their own dresses. We have a variety of sizes and geographical locations, so they know it has to be in black with cream/white or silver accents, our color scheme. I think black & cream/white create a lovely, elegant color pallete, and there are tons of favors and decorations in these colors.

Don't listen to those old wives tales.
  • Definitely ok! My girls are wearing black as well and the dresses are gorgeous. I can't wait to see them that day, the girls are going to look so beautiful. You can't go wrong with the black. Very classic, elegant and sexy, all at once  :)
