Rules for dad's attire?

If the groomsmen are wearning tuxs, does my dad need to wear one as well, or can he wear a nice suit instead? Are there certain rules for fathers' outfits, or is it all personal preference? The more I think about this topic the more unsure I become!

I think unless the wedding is "black tie" for guests, your dad can wear a suit.

The parents aren't part of the wedding party, so they can wear whatever they want to.  That being said, neither or our dads owned a nice suit, so they both opted to rent tuxes, but again, that's not necessary.

My dad bought a nice suit for our wedding. He will be able to use it elsewhere, and he hasn't bought a new suit in a long time, so it was nice for him to be able to do that, and they'd rather spend a little more on something he can use for years than rent a tux for one day.... mind you, we are also going sort of mid way on the casual - formal scale. FI will be wearing a suit and the GM are wearing black vests and dress pants.

As long as it's not black-tie for all guests and as long as they don't show up the groom, I think they're good to go!
