Did anyone wear a corset?

I mean, under your dress. Here's my deal:

I really want to just have cups put into my dress, because I don't feel like dealing with a strapless bra. If I don't have cups put in, I'd need a longline bra, but I'm not sure where to get one (not David's, the one I tried on when I had an appointment there annoyed the crap out of me, but I'm open to any suggestions). I'm a 36D, so stability and perkiness are important. My dress won't be in until the end of this month, and that's when I'll talk to the seamstress, but I don't think it will be an issue.

I also really don't want to wear Spanx. First of all, while they work for smoothing out things, they don't really decrease my waist by a marked amount. Also, even though I have the ones with the hole in the crotch, I'm worried about peeing in them and my dress. Also, since my dress is pretty much a ballgown, it's not like anyone's really going to be able to make out my thighs, so it's all about the waist.

I also like the idea of an underbust corset to trim my waist, plus it
will still look cute and I can just get away with wearing a cute pair of panties under the dress. I thought about doing a full corset underneath, but I'm worried buying it beforehand that it wouldn't be the right lines to be covered under the dress. The reason I just didn't get a corset back dress to begin with is that it just wouldn't have looked right with the dress I got.

So, if you did it, where did you order from? Did it look okay under the dress? Any tips?

For reference, here's my dress:

only the top will look like this:

I'm looking at these corsets, trying to decide if I want something that's going to go over my hips or not:

Your dress is beautiful! I never thought about having cups sewn in my dressI'm going to talk to my seamstress about it. The back is very low but I don't want to wear a long line bra or spanx or anything. I want to be comfortable! I've for a few months to work on it. Hope you figure out the corset!

[QUOTE]A corset will be more confining than a longline bra. They dont have as much give sinctryout have plastic or boning of some sort running all the way down. If your bra was uncomfortable at David's, it may not have fit correctly. I wore a longline under mine, but went up a measurement and down a cup size to get a comfortable fit. If that doesn't work, then cups may be an option, but they won't give you as much support as a bra.

Agree with this. A corset will be more confining and you're likely to find it uncomfortable if you didn't like the long line bra feeling. And they do have to fit properly. I'd suggest an actual bra fitting to make sure that you're wearing the wrong size, plus the person doing the fitting can show you the right way to put it on (there's actually a proper way to do it).

I'm also a 36D and there's no way I'd be comfortable enough to go with just cups sewn into the dress. I even wear a bra under bra-top tank tops!

  • I bought a great longline bra at Macys.com.  I'm bigger than 36D and the one I got stayed up and in position all night.  I wasn't tugging on it or anything.  I find they have better selections online than they do in stores.  But my size can be hard to find in stores, in general.
  • Thanks everyone! It wasn't the constriction of the long line that bothered me so much as it was probably the wrong size and the fabric was awful. And I was sort of just left to put it on alone which didn't really work out because you want it tight enough that it shouldn't move around, and I may still put on a bra like a tweenager (I still hook it in front of me and turn it around). Besides Macy's, is there anywhere else that has good ones? One of my main things is that in addition to book control, I really want stomach control and for my waist to look good.

  • I've not been married yet, but I used to be employed at a Renaissance Faire, and wore corsets for several hours a day, daily.  They are very effective to achieve what you are looking for, BUT, they are not comfortable.

It depends on your tolerance for discomfort/pain.  I tolerate discomfort pretty well, so I really like corsets because of how effective they are at doing their job and creating the look I want.  But let me tell you, after 12 + hours of wearing one, it will be a religious moment to get out of it, slouch, pooch out your stomach, and just exist as a poor-posture puddle for a bit.

  • I got a long line bra from the same place I got the dress. It was nice because I got to try the bra on with the dress and see how it feels. They also knew what they were doing, which helped. I didn't have to worry about ording one and having it not work with the dress. They also went down a cup size. It was very comfortable compared to a corset.
  • I got a longline bra from www.lindathebralady.com they have larger size cups, and the quality was 100% better than the one I tried on at Davids.
